first of the two fantasy/mythology & history-based humorous novels centred upon the (probably) fictional, and possibly divine historical character, photinus the greek, self-centred scion of a trading family possessed of even less in the way of morals, qualms, or conscience than would be anticipated, and who has a habit of making the roman empire rather too hot for him to have a hope of surviving if he reamains within it. having pulled a trick even more ill-advised than normal in a garrison town on the rhenish frontier, he is ah, strongly advised to skip north of the border for however long it takes for things to blow over this time, and see if he can't earn an honest penny - or at least, show a profit for the family - to recompense them for the bother he's caused - possibly by sourcing directly some of the antique arms and armour they've recently been buying from independent traders, each of whose cut pushes up the price they've been paying.

- how photinus carries out his fairly broad commission succeeds in causing the bloody deaths of many of the nobility he meets, upsetting several tribal confederations of germans, setting in train events that'll eventually lead to the destruction of the empire in the west, the creation of much of german & norse mythology, and purely incidentally working the will of the very gods in whom photinus fervently does not believe. . .

- independent sequel is the novel, "not for all the gold in ireland" (1968), q.v.
