ppint. 25th Aug 2024		fiercely anti-communist and anti-nuclear disarmament, fitzgibbon's near-future vision is of a britain invaded and occupied by an opportunistic soviet union after the ill-advisedly idealistic abandonment of nuclear weapons by a left-wing government of the uk-of-gb-&-ni. it was dramatised for television as an itv "play of the week" broadcast in 1962, and after some virulent criticism of the author at the time, he adopted one of the more colourful charges levied against him as the title of his "random thoughts of a fascist hyena" (1963), q.v.
