In this book I recount the story of Wings’ performances between the 1972 University Tour & the Japanese debacle when McCartney was arrested. In the process of research I have listened to over 100 hours of recorded performance. Some of these recordings are from legitimate sources, such as Wings over America but the majority are amateur tapes made by audience members who were intent on capturing the event for posterity. Many of the recordings are quite poor & certainly have no real commercial value. However, they are a worthwhile historical document. In this book I document the recordings, making several observations, such as the standard of playing; differences from studio recordings; on-stage banter; & any other points of interest.

However, recordings tell only a part of the story. A concert, as opposed to studio work, cannot be judged by sound alone. I thought it essential to contact fans who had seen Wings live in the 1970s. In this book you will find recollections from fans across the decade – from the 1972 University Tour to the final Wings performance at the Hammersmith Odeon on the 29th of December 1979. These personal testimonies provide an authentic insight into the whole experience of a Wings concert.

The book’s introduction begins with a brief overview of the break-up of The Beatles and the events that led up to the formation of Wings in 1972. I then trace Wings’ live work chronologically, ending with the abandoned tour of Japan.

Although the primary focus of this book is Wings’ concert tours, they must be understood in the context of the band’s studio work. For this reason I have written about the band’s albums & single releases. In the 1970s tours were undertaken to help sell vinyl & it's interesting to consider how complex studio-recordings, such as Live and Let Die, were adapted to a live setting.
