uncorrected proof: advance reading copy.

- just because only a small number of copies be printed and bound of an edition does not mean it is not an edition in its own right:
whether a formally limited edition declared as such (and whilst some formally limited editions are numbered, many are not),
or an edition that has had some much greater, but still definite print run producing a precisely (or approximately) known number of copies,
or an edition that has (legitimately or illegally) had multiple printings without this being recorded, or where the records have been lost, perhaps over the centuries, perhaps as a result of the closure or takeover of the publisher, perhaps deliberately destroyed as a matter of policy by a not-necessarily criminally-inclined publisher's owner or management,
"bookcat" regards separate editions of a book as separate items.
and as "bookcat" has - so far - accepted that "book club editions" and privately-produced editions, neither of which are offered for sale via the book trade to the general public, are "bookcattable editions" as separate items, in their own right,
it would seem that "bound uncorrected proofs" are and must be "bookcattable editions" and separate items, in their own right.

so yes, enter your hardback as a separate item, noting
(this looks a hell of a lot to do - but that's because i'm giving the different possibilities):
which edition it says it is on the indica page;
which printing it says it is on the indica page;
(sometimes - commonly now:)
the number-string which indicates the printing number by the lowest number left in the string;
the full number of pages (don't count the "fly pages", the pieces of paper glued onto the insides of the hardcover's boards, which "fly" almost-but-not-quite free, glued just a little way to the first real page, hiding the binding join between the book's boards and its carcase-of-all-the-pages);
whether it's properly "sewn in signatures", or "perfect bound" - just glued together onto the backing-strip, really a paperback-between-boards;
what colour cloth - or paper - the boards are covered in, and how title, author, publisher (and aught else) are printed or gold- or silver- or coloured metal- blocked onto the cloth (or paper) of the spine (and maybe also onto the front board)
cover (dust-jacket) art by (if credited, or if art is signed, or if attribution made elsewhere and by whom)
colour interior illustrations by (ditto)
b+w interior illustrations by (ditto)
cover (dust-jacket) price (or prices)

the details help identity and distinguish between the first edition and subsequent editions and printings, which matters to fans of an author, as well as to collectors, historians and librarians (ook!), help place books in their publication order, which can help follow an author's development as a writer as well as the development of a particular series, and can help spot, identify and even help track down pirated editions, which could be defrauding your favourite author or their heirs of income rightfully theirs - as well as help spot fakes, forgeries and chimerae.
- so, go by the book you have in your hand; the "precise and accurate" details really can help people.
I'm a bit new to Book world are you suggesting my book should move to an entry of its own?
By the way I see on the web a much later proof of Men at Arms priced at nearly £400 and a 1st ed of this book signed by TP at a similar price.One PROOF here on EBAY states 100 copies only. here
yr hmbl srppnt.'d opine that the first edition hardcover dj should take prime position even if a scan of the bound uncorrected proof (bound uncorrected proofs of the forthcoming gollancz first editions did achieve runs of hundreds and hundreds of copies, but i don't know how early on these levels were achieved - ask colin?) appears.
i entered it as a bookcat item because it's what i was holding, and the data i entered is from it.
this is not the cover of the bound uncorrected proof.
I have put the HB cover here as I feel the uncorrected proof: advance reading copy probably only exists in a handful of copies and no scans are forthcoming?
