Robyn Hitchcock - Biography

London-born (1953) but initially Cambridge-based leader of the pseudo-punk band, The Soft Boys (1976-81). Subsequently attempted a solo career but became disillusioned, and withdrew from recording in the early 1980s. Re-emerged with a new group, The Egyptians, and signed to major labels (A&M, Warner), leading to an American-focus for the latter part of the 1980s, with Hitchcock living there much of the time.

Occasional solo releases punctuate the period until 1994 when the Egyptians are disbanded. Thereafter Hitchcock is ostensibly a solo artist, but frequently collaborates with others on a succession of live and studio albums. In the early 2000s, he teams up with members of REM for some collaborative albums (those musicians being billed as his backing group, the Venus 3).

As of 2014, RH has issued 23 studio albums in all guises plus that many again, consisting of outtakes, live recordings, compilations, leftovers and so on.

Many of his album covers and CD inserts contain his own paintings, cartoons, short stories and so on.
