The Ink Spots - BiographyTHE INK SPOTS Vocal Group Cincinnati, OH Formed 1934 as The Jesters. Became The Four Ink Spots. Recording debut on Victor: January 1935 Jerry Daniels (b. December 14, 1915 Indianapolis, IN) : lead vocal, guitar Ivory "Deek" Watson (b. July 18, 1909 Mounds, IL): tenor vocal, guitar Charlie Fuqua (b. October 20, 1910): baritone vocal, guitar Orville "Hoppy" Jones (b. February 17, 1902 Chicago, IL; d. October 18, 1944): bass vocal, bass When Jerry Daniels left the group he was replaced by Bill Kenny (b. June 12, 1914 Philadelphia, PA; d. March 23, 1978 Vancouver, B.C.) In 1936 the group signed to Decca. From 1939 on, after the #2 pop smash "If I Didn't Care", the hits followed in rapid succession. Charlie Fuqua was drafted in 1943, replaced by Bernie Mackey en later Huey Long, but returned in 1946, and eventually formed his own Ink Spots in 1952. When Hoppy Jones died in 1944, he was replaced by Cliff Givens, who in his turn was succeeded by Herb Kenny. Deek Watson also left that year forming The Brown Dots, being replaced by saxophonist Billy Bowen.
