Wum's Gesang - Biography

Wum's Gesang means Wum's singing. Wum was a cartoon dog, featured in German ZDF TV quiz show Dreimal neun and its successor, Der große Preis, broadcast in the 1970s. Wum had been created by humorist and cartoonist Loriot, who also provided Wum's voice. Wum got its name from the TV audience in a vote, because it went well with the first name of the show's host Wim Thoelke. The novelty song "Ich wünsch' mir 'ne kleine Miezekatze" ("I'm wishing for a little pussycat") was released as a single in the autumn of 1972. It was the Christmas #1 in Germany and stayed at the top of the charts for nine weeks right until the end of February. A follow up 7", "Abbl-dibabbl", went to #34 in the charts. All proceeds from the records went to charity Aktion Sorgenkind.
