Going by the Classic Motown website, they seem to be saying "Motown" - the actual wording they use is "Motown release" rather than "Motown label". Also, the CD spines and back cover say Motown, notwithstanding the Tamla logos on the front cover and the disc..

Does the company consider it to be Motown? Or do they list it as Tamla. Maybe that's what we should go by.

These reissues that use "historic" labels will be the death of me! Universal are probably the worst offenders for doing this, but by no means the only ones - Fantasy had their Original Jazz Classics line, where the vinyl issues replicated the originals (Prestige, Bluesville, New Jazz, etc), but in the Fantasy catalogues (and in the Concord catalogues that succeeded them) they always specified the label as Original Jazz Classics. Similarly, EMI-USA's "Legends" series of CD reissues in the 1990's frequently replicated dead labels like Aladdin, Minit, Imperial, etc , but always with an EMI-USA logo on them too (like this one also has the Motown logo on the label, to match the branding on the back cover and spines). The SHOUT! label from England put the old Back Beat label design on their Joe Hinton CD a few years back. Essentially, these old designs are being used in a different context than what we are used to, and are more in the line of package artwork rather than "label branding" as such, and if the company considers this to be on the Motown label, I'm not going to second-guess them.

Is there such a thing as a releasing label? It's the releasing company, who are using a label on the product. Otherwise, "Hey Jude" isn't on Apple, it's on EMI. Like it or not, this CD is labelled Tamla.

Okay I'm changing my answer. Motown it is.

Well, this is a bit like all those Verve jazz reissues (not coincidentally, also via Universal) which reproduce the original LP labels like Mercury, EmArcy, Decca and so on, or Universal's deluxe editions of The Who and others - are we now going to say that the MY GENERATION deluxe edition is on Brunswick and Decca, because those vintage 45 labels are replicated on the discs? I think we need to recognize that the releasing label here is Motown, just as the label for the Who is Polydor (or MCA or Gefen on US issues), and Verve for the jazz reissues.

 Agreed...

(Though it does say Motown on the spine, but I'd say the Tamla logo on the disc trumps it).

Am I the only one who finds it curious that this is listed as a Motown label CD? Surely it should be Tamla?
