@PhilMH
Hi Phil,feel i've been mis-quoted there a bit;),what i actually said was this...
"@Lee Wrecker
:) To be honest Lee,i just enter CD's now from wherever country they were intended for,i don't bother about International anymore,as i feel it is a fairly pointless exercise,and in reality,only adds confusion where there is none,if a CD was intended for release in Canada alone,Italy (which we enter separately anyhow) alone,or any other country,then it should be entered as such IMHO (I should point out,that that is only my way of adding CD's,but i've been doing it for a while now,and no-one's complained,(yet);)"
I was referring to the fact that i add CD's from where they were intended for,and not grouping them together just because they happen to share the same Cat.No./barcode/label,so if a Mexican CD and a European CD share the same details forinstance,i personally do not add them to one page,requesting that it be made "International",but,rather add the CD separately for whatever country the one i have was intended for (if i know it;).
I am well aware Phil of how difficult it can be to determine where a CD was actually put on sale/distributed,and i've never said it was easy.
Sometimes,with a bit of detective work,at least one country where it was destined for can be found,and that's a start,and if not,use "unknown country".I agree that early CD's can be difficult,but i don't think they are any worse than some new releases,at least we sort of know that all the early German CD's on the site were probably issued in Europe,and that most of the Japanese made CD's were destined for the US.
As i've said before,what we could really do with is someone who has worked in the industry,particularly in distribution,to help us look for specific indicators to assist with correct identification.Until that day,i suspect we'll just keep slogging on,trying to make the best guesses;)
For what it's worth, the 19319-2 and 250 841 numbers seem to be erroneous, as those belong to THE BEST OF THE MANHATTAN TRANSFER on Atlantic, so some sort of foul-up at WMG, I think! Another thing to be aware of with this Joni album, and indeed all of her Reprise and Asylum albums, is that they were HDCD remastered in the mid-1990's (I forget exactly when, but I could go through my ICE back issues to check) but retained the catalogue numbers from the previous issues (1001-2 for the US and Canadian pressings, 7559-60593-2 for the European), unlike other remastered reissues from Warners which were typically given new numbers (the Led Zeppelin catalogue comes to mind), so should the HDCD versions be kept separate or not? (They have an HDCD logo on the back, next to the label logo).
The disc with three numbers sounds very much like an early issue that was manufactured for multiple countries, and so had multiple numbers to cater for each market, i.e. 1001-2 for US & Canada, and 253 002 for Europe and other places, reflecting the original LP catalogue numbers in certain territories (which for this album was 7E-1001 in US and Canada, and K 53002 in UK and Europe; similarly, the Manhattan Transfer set was originally SD 19319 in the US, but the original UK/Europe number was K 50856, so getting 250 841 for the CD looks like another foul up!). Greg said something a week or so ago about entering CD's using the country that they are intended for - easy enough when each country makes it own, as has been the case for most major releases the last couple of decades, but not so easy for earlier CDs, or even for current CDs that are distributed in multiple countries by the company's international branches, and they rarely state which countries they are being distributed in.
Like I said couldn't know because there were no scans to support "the uniqueness" of your entry. I agree mine should probably have its own page. Will do tomorrow. NEW entry made: 1001-2 / 253 002
All those numbers quoted do not appear on the CD or artwork that was used for the original entry. The only serial number for this entry that I posted in April 2014 is 253 002. The one that leonard is using is from a different release to the original entry. and the original scan should be used and not relegated like many others that I have uploaded.
@leonard
Blimey,spoilt for choice here;),it looks like the core numbers are 1001 / 53 002,so i would maybe have listed them all to play safe,can't do any harm;)
like so - 1001-2 / 253 002 / 61001-2 / 19319-2 / 250 841
It's worth pointing out that Discogs has these Target's as UK/Europe/US,so International on our site.
Interestingly,your barcode matches this release but with a red Target and solitary 61001-2 Cat.No.
the other two Target's they have (1984) don't have barcodes,curious.
1. Image is not on speckled (or structured) paper as yours seems to suggests. Also we now have a complete set where the colors of booklet and back are the same
2. Added songwriters (easy)
3. Year of release is way before 1990 on this particular pressing.
4. By not entering other scans or other info it's not easy to determine a correct date/sequence. I hesitated if mine was the same as you entered.
Thank you
Added the year of this release. Yet another entry of mine where a perfectly good image has been relegated.to be hidden. What's the point I ask myself ??
What a nightmare this is!!! Are we supposed to know which cat# to use when there is 1001-2 on the label, 61001-2 and 253 002 on the spine and on top of that 19319-2 and 250 841 on the back and on the booklet. Oh yes and on the ring is also a PDO number 2893 022.
