RogerFoster 9th Mar 2016		Review I've a feeling that if I were an Egyptian Pharoah this would be one of the possessions that I would want to have buried alongside me in my tomb in order to make my existence in the afterlife more pleasant. It's difficult for me to think of any better way of spending eternity than listening to Jerry Butler's soulful crooning and some of these tracks will sound heavenly on the celestial dancefloors (they are probably popular up there already ... I shall have to consult my Ouija Board). The collection covers, in chronological order, the period 1966-73 between Mr Butler's period at Chicago's Vee-Jay Records and his mid 1970's move to Motown, as such it catalogues the development of Soul/R&B from the rough and ready sounds of the mid '60s through to the more sophisticated styles of the early 1970s. Well represented on here are Mr Butler's late '60s Philadelphia recordings with Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff (a precursor of their mid '70s "Philly Sound"), we also have one of Jerry Butler's duets with Gene Chandler (as "Gene And Jerry") and some of his duets with Brenda Lee Eager. There is also Jerry's seldom heard "I've Been Loving You Too Long".... a song he co-wrote with Otis Redding during a brief meeting when they both happened to be performing in the same town and which has just as great a claim to being the original version as Otis's better known version.
