Within eight weeks of Karen Carpenter's death, her brother Richard Carpenter returned to A&M Studios and started work on what would become Voice of the Heart, a collection of outtakes and other previously unreleased songs, including several from Karen's last recording session in 1982. The album failed to break the US Top 40 but spent more weeks on the chart than any original Carpenters album since Now & Then ten years earlier. In the United Kingdom it out performed Passage and Made in America.

The packaging is a reproduction of the original US packaging (including the original catalogue number CD-4954), but this was bought in the UK and the disc states BIEM/MCPS. The disc and the front of the jewel case backing sheet mirrors the style from the other 2009 (Carpenters 40) re-releases so this disc probably dates from 2009.

The credits and lyrics on three panels of the six-panel insert are so blurred they almost unreadable.
