Notes

Originally released in 1989.

From the CD booklet by Richard Carpenter:

The release of Lovelines, the final Carpenters album, commemorates the twentieth year of our association with A&M Records. The album consists of twelve selections (10 previously unreleased) four of which are from Karen's sessions with producer Phil Ramone and the remaining eight being sides which Karen and I had recorded through the years.

Lovelines, If We Try, Remember When Lovin' Took All Night and If I Had You are from Karen's solo album Karen Carpenter.

The disc states BIEM/MCPS. The disc and the front of the jewel case backing sheet mirrors the style from the other 2009 (Carpenters 40) re-releases so this disc probably dates from 2009.

I think this is a 2009 re-release, as the disc and the front of the jewel case backing sheet mirrors the style from the other 2009 (Carpenters 40) re-releases.

Thanks Phil. Let's go with 1998 to start with then.

Discogs has dates for this ranging from 1989 (probably based on the copyright dates) to 2009 (date of an apparent repressing via Universal). As the packaging mentions PolyGram, the first release of this catalogue number couldn't have been any later than late 1998, which is when Universal purchased PolyGram and the latter company ceased to exist. PolyGram itself bought A & M in late 1989, but it wasn't until the following January that PolyGram started distributing the label in many countries, though PolyGram did have distribution rights in Germany before the purchase. I've checked the Australian Platterlog catalogues that I've put online up to January 1992, but there is no occurrence of this number (the collection had previously been released in Australia in 1989 via A & M's then-licensee Festival). My catalogues are in storage at the moment, so I can't check any further, but my guess would be early 90s (though this pressing could well be a 2000s one - Universal don't seem to have bothered correcting the company name on many of their repressings).

Some help needed here from a Carpenters expert. I have no idea when this CD was released. I guess some time in the 2000s given the albums listed on the jewel case backing sheet.

It's pretty shoddy packaging from A&M - I'm surprised Richard Carpenter did not insist on better packaging. But I love the album - I've only recently discovered it. I might well invest in Karen's solo album based on the four tracks here from it.
