| | they're essentially part numbers, for the people assembling the sets correctly and/or for the people restocking the storage bins on racking, for smaller quantities to be abstracted from correctly for the assemblers. everything has to have a part number, and frequently either its own bar-code or, at least, the smallest box or sealed bag of them orderable has to have its bar-code - else it cannot be tracked - or, sometimes, ever found again. . . |

| | You are right to a degree Greg, and many companies have allocated (and continue to allocate) separate numbers to each record in a multi-disc set, but are they anything that we really need to worry about, apart from including them in the notes as you have? Any retailer who ordered this would only have ordered it by the main catalogue number. Some box sets are quite large (the B.B. King set I'm wading through, for example) and the catalogue number field could get quite unwieldy if we entered every disc number in there too. |

| | Moderator's : There was a discussion a while back about these Columbia "01-_ _ _ _ _ _-_ _" prefixed numbers as regards what they actually are?.I recall a member suggesting they were distribution codes, but the evidence here on this release has caused me to question that premise.I am beginning to wonder whether they are secondary Cat.No's.As you can see, each disc has it's own number, and surely they wouldn't allocate a separate distribution code/number for each CD,they wouldn't after all distribute each CD separately?,but you would have a separate secondary Cat.No. for ordering a specific CD from the set.So on this evidence,i would perhaps suggest that they may indeed be secondary Cat.No's rather than distribution codes.Discogs does list them as such (not always, but a majority of the time, enough to suggest that they are not one-off input errors anyway;),so perhaps we should think about treating them as such here.Something else to consider perhaps ;) |
