Notes

Originally released in 1972 as a triple LP boxed set with a sixty-four page full colour booklet, the first release on CD emerged in 1991 with a thirty-six page colour booklet. Produced by George Harrison and Phil Spector.

With millions starving and suffering from disease in his home country, Ravi Shankar approached George Harrison to assist him in organising a benefit concert to aid UNICEF in their relief of refugee children in Bangla Desh. In a matter of five or six weeks, George had invited several top stars to donate their services, including John, Paul and Ringo. Only Ringo accepted the offer. Paul refused because he didn't consider the time right for a Beatles reunion; John initially agreed but later declined when he realised that the invitation did not extend to Yoko. The concert was staged on 1 August 1971, at Madison Square Gardens, New York, with an afternoon and evening show. The concerts were recorded via forty-four microphones, using a Wally Heider sixteen-track machine from the Record Plant, controlled by Phil Spector. The resultant tape was mixed by Spector and produced by Harrison and Spector.

The concerts raised $243,418.50 for the charity. A cheque for that sum was sent by Madison Square Gardens Center Inc to UNICEF on 2 August 1971, with total proceeds from the concerts, film and album raising over fifteen million dollars. Unfortunately only a small amount of this figure ever got to Bangla Desh, as legal problems with various record companies and US revenue tied the money up for years. Ravi Shankar and George Harrison received The Child is the Father Of Man award from UNICEF on 5 June 1972.

Revenue from the CD versions has provided funds for The George Harrison Fund for UNICEF.

Not an easy entry to determine for the overall artist and then other contributing vocalists. The actual album does not refer to "George Harrison And Friends" at all, but this is how it is referred to in many reference books. Indeed the most recent (2005) CD re-release uses this term.

As for references to the actual main artists singing each track, it seems incongruous just to use "George Harrison And Friends" as we know from the accompanying booklet who sang each song. And each singer was accompanied by the band selected by George. So I've gone for the format "[main vocalist] And Friends", as I used on the vinyl entry.
