gregs78s The only one Missing off Your list Is.

Babyface 11 Tracks.

Not surprizing as this was a Mini Disc release and a CD as well. I can not find the Mariah Carey Mini Disc anywhere for sale, Not surprising as It was Rare at the time of Release Plus no one had a Player to play It In. I Have both on Mini Disc. They advertised It as the First Commercially Release EP. on Mini Disc. H.

I reckon that's been the most controversial 50p I ever spent in a charity shop :-))

It seems, in that case, to be a nudge and a wink form Columbia then -

"this EP is not really an EP or single (nudge nudge), and the fact that we have given it an album cat designation in spite of the wording: "EP" is in no way to circumvent current chart rules in any way (wink)"

It's an album / single hybrid lab experiment / fiddle :)

(not helpful for this site though!)

Good old Billboard, the place to look for authentic info

Marketed by the company as an album, given an album cat# and reached #3 in the UK and Billboard album charts. It's an album.

All cd singles from this period from columbia start with 65*****. This one has an album cat#. I think this is the right place for it. And I've changed it to Europe...

 Indeed.

If someone asked you to look for an EP on vinyl, where would you look for it?

(Or a CD for that matter)

@MM. Indeed,no,i can't find any others (MTV related) that have EP in the title.A few of the albums are as follows:
Nirvana (New York) - 14 tracks
A.I.Chains - 13 tracks
Kiss - 15 tracks
A. Morissette - 12 tracks
B. Dylan - 12 tracks
Placebo - 17 tracks
E. Clapton - 14 tracks
so it seems that most of the MTV releases all have over 10 tracks(although i didn't check them all),there are a couple of singles i think, but they only have 3 tracks, this is inbetween a single and a full album, and i have also seen it described as a "Maxi-Single";)so this may have had something to do with either the amount of material the record company wanted to put out/or was chosen to be performed live?,or perhaps,it was just about TV "slots",and the amount of airtime available?(Gawd knows;),as i say,for want of a better choice (or until we get an "EP/Maxi-Single/Mini-album World";),i'd put it under singles:)

Maybe the existing 45 world should be called "CD singles & EPs"
That would definitely avoid confusion.

The rule is that the release should be added to the world where users would likely look for it.
For me, for example, I'd never look for this CD under singles.

So the other MTV unplugged artist discs have the letters: "EP" anywhere about their person (so to speak)?

I know the chart rules citation determines what, according to them, a single is, and as useful a guide as that is, clearly the company releasing this had other ideas.

... so who is the authority on what kind of CD a release is, the chart company, who determine what kind of CD can be admitted to their list... or the company who released it, designating it as an EP on the artwork?

The chart company's authority exists only in determining qualifying releases for appearing on their list, not how or what a company releases... and that company will only heed those rules if they desire to have their release be eligible appear on that list / chart.

(mind you, if you take that to be the case with regards to this release, you may close one can of worms here, but inadvertently open up another, by suddenly calling into question swathes of "albums", "EPs" and others.)

@MM. A quick search using "MTV Unplugged EP" only reveals Mariah's one here and one more by Maxwell, all other MTV Unplugged ones,Eric Clapton,Kiss,Nirvana etc etc appear to be all full albums.
(Don't despair MM ;)
(PS Four tracks feature on the Emotions vinyl LP,but as this was a later unplugged session,i don't think it was used to promote the album?,and,as such, was probably a separate affair.)

But then... the presence of the words: "MTV Unplugged EP" ont he spine makes this an EP, and therefore a single all day long for me.

Was there an expanded "proper album" of this MTV unplugged performance - more tracks?

...If so, that would suggest this bears the same relationship to that as EPs used to have with the "parent" album... might make this an EP, and therefore a single, unless it's an album sampler, in which case a promotional release, but this was available in the shops, so maybe not (head in hands - weeping :(

This is another of those "inbetweeners",is it a single or is it a mini-album?,my usual rule of thumb is to try and find out what it was marketed at when first put on sale, running time isn't always a reliable indicator, with some singles having multiple mixes of the same tracks,so ideally,if someone out there (Phil?) has some contemporary catalogues, which indicate whether it was originally marketed as a single or mini-album/album,that would be great,as a quick search online produces mixed results for this one, although, again, only as a general rule of thumb,if it has EP in the title,i tend to enter them as singles rather than the full album (but that's only how i do it;).If deemed to belong in Singles World then the USA copy would have to be moved over,as it's not currently on.

28 minutes and 44 seconds - so, over five minutes longer than the album, the best of tim hardin - ?

- maybe the best of tim hardin needs 45catting as a 12" single-or-ep. . .
