Initially released in Japan on 1 August 2001, an international release was due to follow soon thereafter, but the release of the album generated copyright discrepancies among several publishers. These discrepancies were not resolved until late 2003, delaying the album's international release until 13 April 2004.
The tracks contained on this album span the years 1967–1980, and are culled from a wide variety of media: demos, outtakes, live performances, as well as the Carpenters' television specials.
Tracks 1, 4, 6, 7 and 8 were recorded for the Carpenters final special, Music Music Music, in 1980; tracks 5 and 9 were recorded for their 1977 special Space Encounters; tracks 2 and 14 were recorded for the Carpenters' First Television Special in 1976; track 11 was recorded for a Perry Como special, and the hidden track was recorded live during the 1971 Live at the BBC broadcast.
The other songs come from various sources; two very early songs here are Nowhere Man and California Dreaming - these are demos recorded by Richard and Karen in the garage recording studio of bassist Joe Osborne in 1967. Leave Yesterday Behind and The Rainbow Connection are the only songs on the collection which are left-over album work tracks, never before released.
