Lee Wrecker 2nd Aug 2017		Apollo59 I did say "A great album if you love the Stones so much hearing them run through some blues standards is enough to get you off." This has been consigned to the cheap bins in Australia and is currently for sale nearly everywhere for $9.99 that's 6 Quid or $8 USA and is now the cheapest "Stones" album you can buy new in the country. I know that doesn't reflect the value of the music on the CD but more likely reflects record company over production. You yourself said "They (the Stones) always hold pre-production jam sessions before proper recording, where they knock around a few ideas and run through old stuff like this just to warm up." And sure if you (or I) saw the Stones do this as a warm up set in a little club it would be a dream come true but as an album it 's not so hot - to me anyway. It wasn't me that started the comparison to the first album. That idea was bandied about in the initial PR or mainstream reviews and I just used it as it was contemporary talk at the time of release. Anyway Apollo59 you should know by now I have a love - hate relationship with the Stones. When I was 10 the first band I ever saw was the Stones back in the early 70's and it completely blew me away. As a result I became an avid collector in my teens and early twenties up to the Dirty Work (not many of that one on here) and Undercover period where I lost the faith. Too a large degree that's where I still sit on subsequent material. So anything I say is tinged with my bias in these areas and a bit of "Aussie" tall poppy syndrome mentality I suppose. Nice to know this one hits the spot for some fans though.



Apollo59 2nd Aug 2017		Lee, I hear what you're saying but I can't agree on some of your review. The Stones recorded this album over just 3 days in December 2015. By no means was this a big production or of major product standing and I think it's important to know this. It was completely irrelevant to the contemporary music scene. As for the content being highly predictable? I really don't think so. By no means are all the songs classics or well known and I reckon only half of them are such. To compare this with their very first album back in 1964 is ludicrous - they are worlds apart in production values, musical ability and musical knowledge. Jagger's vocals and harmonica playing are exemplary here. The playing is extremely modern in approach and negates any need to imitate the blatant commercialism of the previously mentioned Hooker albums. These recordings are of a band all playing together live simultaneously in the same room - at no time were any performances "flown in" as overdubs. This idea that the Stones songwriting team have been off form for many years is somewhat incongruous, namely because the Stones haven't made a new self-written album since 2005, and have produced just 2 songs for inclusion with their 50th anniversary collection, Grrr! in 2012. This album is really just an example of what the Stones do every time they go into the studio to record a new album. They always hold pre-production jam sessions before proper recording, where they knock around a few ideas and run through old stuff like this just to warm up. Come recording sessions proper, the archive session lists inform that songs such as these pepper just about every session the Stones have recorded these last 50 odd years. Lee Wrecker 11th Dec 2016		Review This album has shot to No. 1 in the UK (11/12/16) and is widely being heralded as the best thing the Stones have done since God knows when, but is it? Well, in some ways it is. It's certainly the most consistently good album they've made for a very long time but that can be put down to the fact the none of the songs were written by Jagger/Richard(s). The Stones' songwriting team have been off form for many years. So on Blue and Lonesome there are no original songs but the blues covers selected are all classics and excellent choices. That said the songs chosen also reflect artists that had a big influence on the Stones sound particularly in their early years. Many reviews are making a link from this album their eponymous debut The Rolling Stones and touting it as a return to their roots as a band. So how does it compare to their debut which incidentally currently has an average rating of between 5 and 6 on this site. Well on Blue And Lonesome the playing is tighter and the production is better but is it a better album? I'd say no for several reasons. My main beef is that the album contains a highly predictable set of covers that are pretty much faithful reproductions of the original songs. The band still sound good but not much has been done to put their own mark on these old blues classics. John Lee Hooker's "The Healer" and "Mr. Lucky" are much better examples of how to update or tweak the blues for a modern audience. Now, don't get me wrong, I like the Stones and listened to them a lot in my childhood because my Dad was a huge fan. The first live band I saw was the Stones in 1973 and I still have 15 or so of their albums in my collection so I do like the band. Songs the Stones covered on earlier albums are probably the main reason I started collecting and hunting down blues music in general. So I have the Stones to thank for this but I also have the original versions of every song on this album and quite frankly I prefer them to versions offered up here on Blue and Lonesome. The album is a good introduction to Chicago blues and is well played by seasoned musicians but if you want the real thing search out The Chess Box or the original albums. All in all Blue and Lonesome is a good Stones album of classic blues tracks but it lacks any real spark or identity of its own. A great album if you love the Stones so much hearing them run through some blues standards is enough to get you off. Average otherwise 5/10. 8 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review?
