PhilMH I agree with both your suggestions, leave this as an EU release and scrapping the guide and starting again. Entrusting faith in the wisdom of the crowd and hoping that banging them in and sorting them later will work is wishful thinking at best. Now, make no mistake it is not easy territory to navigate but what we're doing is just making a mess and causing needless friction between people that love the site.

Even though I have no friends here on the site anymore specifically due to this issue I will not simply lay down and accept that way we deal with international releases is in any way adequate or appropriate. The banter and good will that used to exist between me you, Gregs45s, leonard, Magic Marmalade, Roger and the VJ and other MODS has all disappeared. That's what the current guidelines have done, fragmented a team that could have come up solutions and adapted to things on the fly.

Discogs can't deal with this either but we were better placed a few years ago but now we've lost the advantage by going the wrong way and piling stuff in without any real scrutiny. We can still sort it out but it would have been much easier when there was less than 100 000 things to deal with. Plough on or re-group is the question. My feeling is re-group and try again taking on board what we have learned so far.

Just for a change, the first Australian CD issue of this had the same barcode, but an entirely different catalogue number, being a variation on the original UK vinyl catalogue number, see Discogs. So, it might be an idea to change the guide to adding CD's to remove the reference to barcode being the primary identifier for this site, because there is now no guarantee that items with the same barcode will have the same catalogue number. (Actually, considering all the discussions on this site over the last few years, thought could be given to completely scrapping that guide, and starting again.) Anyway, I agree that this one stays as Europe until someone proves otherwise!

Thanks for adding the Argentinian issue Careys... now linked below, and the back cover on this page deleted :)

Unless anyone can offer info to the contrary, specific to this issue, I'll leave this one as Europe, as there's an earlier one for USA linked already, so might be a contemporary issue with this for that market.

I believe that Careys Argentinian release should be listed as from Argentina. It certainly was not manufactured (or put together as the case may be) with the intention of release to other countries outside Argentina. It does not bear the Warner Music International label code LC 14666 and Warner Music Argentina S.A. is a national sub-label of Warner Music International along with many other national sub-labels. Some of these are also South American so Carey's CD is not likely to have been distributed or sold outside of Argentina. Therefore, it was clearly released specifically for the Argentinian market and should be listed as such.

The criteria we use in determining international releases on 45 Worlds such as matching cat#s, label and barcode do not serve us well in cases like this. The problem stems from the multi-national arms of global music corporations applying the same cat#s, labels and barcodes to all of their sub-labels (cheaper by the dozen?, or just more convenient?) but this disguises the fact that national releases were distributed to specific markets.

This all changed in 1999 when Warner's, BMG Rights Management and Universal merged and streamlined operations to become truly global. That is when the role of the sub-labels was reduced to distributing the same identical (usually made in the EU) product to all of the national markets simultaneously.

As Careys CD is a pre 1999 release and particular to a market I think it should be listed as Argentinian regardless of how it matches our controversial and inadequate international classification system. I'm not saying that because this particular CD doesn't match our criteria well it's because same problem applies to the entire Warner's catalogue.

If you know it's intended market of distribution, enter it as that, not the place of manufacture (unless the two are the same :)

If the disc was intended for, and available in US only, then US it is, unless it was ALSO available outside US, in which case, it is, by definition, international, and to be entered as such.

So if you make a new Argentinian entry form your copy, I'll push your back cover image over once you've added the other images.

Hope that helps :)

((Even if the disc inside is the same as the European one... In that case it should still go with the Argentinian entry / packaging, as that's how someone in Argentina would find a copy of it when they bought it))

If this disc was made in Europe for distribution in the U.S.A should country be listed as U.S.A.? I have this disc with the same Cat# number and barcode made in Europe for distribution in Argentina. So what country should that be listed? I Have uploaded a variant back cover image to view. Can someone take a look and advise
