P.P.S. I think Billboard archives may be the source of the error - looking online, the first few pages of the issue dated April 2, 1966 have somehow been merged with the bulk of the issue from October 22, the latter issue showing the album on the chart. I believe that Billboard was available on microfilm for some years before the advent of the internet, so this conflation must have happened then.
P.S. LP debuted on the R & B albums chart the week of July 30, 1966, and eventually peaked at #1. It's hard to imagine that it would have taken three months to chart after release, so I think the April date is distinctly suspect.
Hi Roger, I think that 1991 is right, as that fits in with my recollection of when the Atlantic & Atco Remasters series started. Discogs also has the US edition of this, with a release date of 11 June 1991 (unsourced, but that date was a Tuesday, then-standard US release day) and Schwann also has June 1991. R.E.D. catalogue has July 1991 for this UK/Europe release. Something that I never noticed until I read the US entry in Discogs is that the liner notes state that some of the tracks were recorded in August 1966, but the LP release date is given as April 1, 1966! The liner notes for Edsel's recent 2-on-1 reissue of this also say "early April". The album entered Billboard's pop albums chart the week of August 6th, so it would have to have been released in July at the latest. Looking in Michel Ruppli's Atlantic discography, that has August 8, 1966 for several tracks on the LP, so I suspect that might be the date of the stereo mix, or even stereo rerecordings, which had happened before at Stax, e.g. different mono and stereo versions of "Otis Blue".
Another release with no indication of a release date (apart from the original LP in 1966). Discogs have 1991, but the catalogue number looks like 1988/89 is more likely.
