634-5789 (soulsville usa) was stax records (q.v.) where the first of the wicked pickett's hits were recorded, produced by steve cropper. atlantic records having seriously pissed off jim stewart, stax' active co-owner, following recording sessions moved to nearby fame studio, muscle shoals, alabama through the end of the sixties, after which gamble & huff's philadelphia sound at first produced two more hits for pickett, but later drowned both classic soul and r&b in the strings and jazz-funk rhythms of disco, which
few of the classic soul singers survived unscathed.
