 philmh: because it wasn't a success then, doesn't necessarily mean it wouldn't work now;

- but it does need to be implemented in a way that can cope with partial information being input initially,
and with clear (short°) explanations of the distinctions between (e.g.) "where bought", "where manufactured",
and "where intended to be distributed (with clickable/tappable link to a list of the abbreviations like biem, gema, mcps, sabam, siae etc, and which countries they indicate)",

- so people just beginning to "cd-cat" or "modern-era-lpcat" their collections can be reasonably confident they're not getting it wrong - and be right about this!

- an option that brought up very close°° matches to items one's proposing to add could be/would be both useful in reducing duplication - and potentially extremely irritating if it kept on cutting in whilst one was keying - a "try it now" radio button, plus a switchable-off automagical run attached to "submit" might be best - ?

° - so yr hmbl srppnt.'s first attempts at phraseology should *_not_* be accepted uncritically

°° - how close is close? - "real close..." (lieber-stoller-possibly-morton - no?)

 I think Rhino is the main label, as their logo is on the spine, and the catalogue number fits into their system, but it probably doesn't matter a great deal the way it is at the moment, I have just added the existing tag for Rhino Atlantic & Atco Remasters, though. Deja vu reading the old comments about the country issue, and I had forgotten that one of the mods had previously told me that multiple countries had been tried before without success. Ah well!

 Label here should be Atlantic or Atlantic / Rhino whichever fits best. I've sent a correction thinking it was my entry but then realised it wasn't but nevertheless it's done. Interesting that the debate on this page is nearly 3 years old and is still bubbling away. Some good ideas and suggestions from PhilMH and cussincarrinon02 that could be revisited.

 Hi Marco, I don't think there is one easy and infallible answer to all of this, unfortunately, given the state of the market(s) since the beginning of the CD era. AS far as Australia is concerned, domestic production didn't really start before 1989 AFAICR, and the majors were importing copies from mostly Europe (which I still find a bit strange, as other countries were nearer), but also sometimes US and Japan, and there were Korean pressings available from PolyGram (mostly). Most Australian releases I think are now domestically pressed, but reissues and the more marginal new issues still tend to be imports. And then there were US issues that were pressed in Europe or Japan too, some of those are probably easy to work out as US issues by the record company address and/or catalogue number style used, others less so - not everyone knows the history of the Decca and London trademarks, for example, so people may not realize that a classical CD on the London label but pressed in Germany is actually a US/Canadian release, because the US addresses didn't always appear on those. I suggested some times ago that multiple country fields could be the answer, but apparently that was tried some time ago and was a disaster. Perhaps another way to go would be to rename the existing Country field to "Country Of Release", with all the current country options available, but which can be left blank if users don't know or aren't sure, and a new field for "Country of Manufacture" be introduced, with all the current country names except International being usable here.

As for Ace/Kent and some of the other smaller companies, do they actually have licensees in Germany or elsewhere releasing their product, or are they only available via import shops and online stores? I think the test for country of release should be whether something is actually released by a domestic subsidiary or licensee.

Generally, all people can do at the moment is enter information as best as they can (in WEA/Warners case, anything pressed by Record Service Alsdorf or Warner Music Manufacturing Europe is likely to be at least a Europe release, and some will be International), and users with additional information should just continue to make comments or request corrections.

 Thanks Phil ... German amazon gives 23 July as release date. But I am still confused how to settle the country issue, frankly, and there is as yet no consensus about it ... and given the complexity of it all there never will. But if international means "world without US" we might tag this and many other CDs as international. It's pretty confusing.
PS : Ace and Kent CDs, for example, are by all considered "UK" even though they are perfectly sold in Germany and many other countries, so here the country of release is decisive. I personally would closely stick with what the CD cover says. If it says, like here "Warner Europe", it's Europe. If it said "Warner UK", it's UK (no matter in which countries it was sold) .. this at least would make things a trifle easier ?
Second P.S. In the internet age even the question of where a CD is sold loses its importance, since I buy a lot via the net and don't even know where a CD might be available in shops or not. In some ways, all CDs in the internet age are international if we apply other criteria apart from the actual country of release / production (like for example availability).

 Hi Marco, I think this one is probably International; my copy of this is US, but I have Euro pressings of some of Aretha's other albums (SOUL '69; THIS GIRL'S IN LOVE WITH YOU; SPIRIT IN THE DARK; LIVE AT FILLMORE WEST; YOUNG, GIFTED AND BLACK) that were released in Australia as domestic issues. Australian release date for this title was 18th October 1993, the Euro release was probably closer to the US release on 20th July 1993 (date as shown in Amazon US, and also in July 1993 ICE Newsletter, which also shows ARETHA ARRIVES on the same date, along with Wilson Pickett's first two).
