That's not OK Phil. Only if the item is made in Australia or made especially for Australia we list it as Australian. We can't have a separate entry for every country this was released in. We're working with an extensive database here and must keep things manageable. You own the same thing that's listed here and the Australian release date is in the notes. That's enough I think. I do believe The Beatles were released in almost every country that has a seat in the United Nations. No need at all to list the same thing over and over again.
Hi Lee, it wasn't necessarily that the disc wasn't specifically manufactured for Australia - as I understand record company workings in the CD age (from various forum posts on Discogs by people in the know), any international subsidiary or affiliate could order stock from one or more of an overseas company's central warehouses, so this item, whilst primarily a UK release, would most probably have been listed in PolyGram's worldwide internal catalogue, available for any countries who chose not to (or who were unable to) manufacture the item themselves. Polygram in Australia decided to release it (and presumably were supplied by the German warehouse, who may or may not have also supplied the German market) and notified it to Platterlog as a local release in March 1989. Whether or not they later distributed copies made somewhere else, I don't know, but it's possible, although probably more likely for the top sellers (e.g. Beatles CD's originally manufactured in the UK, later made in Australia for EMI once more factories were on stream). Anyway, I'll create another entry for Australia, with the Australian release date, and link it to this one.
The way I would go about this Phil is as follows. Change country to UK and add (send a correction) "This CD was released in Australia on 20th March 1989" to the notes. That way the integrity of the original release UK release will be preserved and identifiable and the fact that is was also an Australian release will also be apparent. Making it "international" will destroy its identity on both counts. I think we're all after accuracy in the entries and this way all the data will be available on this entry. I would not be in favour of creating a separate Australian entry in this case as the disc was not produced here. If it were, I would be in favour of splitting the releases along the lines of the intended market rule - that the disc was made with the intention of being sold in Australia specifically but that is not the case here.
Why I entered this as Europe defeats me now! Perhaps the German script around the rim....? But with no Price Codes or Rights Societies in evidence it's clearly a UK release, as here. Perhaps a Mod could correct it for me?
I'm not sure if this should be split or not: it was entered as Europe, but the details on the back insert suggest that it should be UK only (UK company name, and no French price code nor German label code) and the disc was made in the UK. However, the disc distributed by PolyGram in Australia was made in West Germany by PDO, but has the same back insert. I could copy this for the Australian entry, but have no real idea whether or not it was released on the European mainland, so Europeans please advise!
Well De-Lite was certainly their label in The US PhilMH, but in The UK they had releases on a number of labels (London, Mojo, Polydor, Contempo, Mercury) before De-Lite was launched as a UK label in 1980, as can be seen on their UK Discography at 45Cat.
Plus, country needs to be made "International" too - this was released in Australia as a "local" release on 20th March 1989, according to Platterlog (I bought my copy in Adelaide).
The usual excess of logos on a major company release, we have De-Lite, Club and Phonogram on this. I would tend towards making De-Lite the main label, as that was the band's label for most of their career.
