| | Ah, the joys of CD buying in the globalisation age, Helen! It can be tricky to find out exactly where a particular product was released, because the "made in EU" statement on the package is only there because of an EU regulation that says that that statement has to be there for anything that is made in an EU member country; it does not in itself indicate that the product was released throughout the EU. Similarly. "Made in Germany" on the disc does not necessarily mean "released in Germany". I think Roger Foster assumed these to be UK releases as they originated from Universal-Island Records Ltd., one of the UK Universal companies. However, I have had a quick look this morning in the online catalogues of both the French and German National LIbraries, and both of them have this CD (I didn't check the other four, but I expect they will be there too); Wikipedia tells me that in Germany, it has been a legal requirement since 1973 for the German publishers of recordings to deposit two copies of a recording with the German Music Archive branch of the library, and though I haven't yet found confirmation of a similar requirement for France, I imagine the situation there is the same.
Nor does "Made in EU" necessarily mean "released only in the EU", as the Platterlog catalogue that was published here in Australia tells me that these collections were released by Universal Music Australia on 22nd January 2007; Australian record companies frequently obtain stock from their overseas parents (usually UK/Europe, but occasionally US), especially for back catalogue releases like these, and they are marketed as "local" releases in the same way as any Australian-manufactured product. This probably happens to a greater degree worldwide now as many CD (and vinyl) factories have closed, and both Universal and Sony maintain international divisions that co-ordinate the worldwide domestic releases of their products, and the addresses of those divisions (Hilversum, Holland and Gütersloh, Germany) frequently appear on the packages (Warner Music probably has a similar setup, but I haven't noticed anything on their products to indicate that).
So, in short, Roger added these as UK in good faith, but they are not only UK, and not only Europe, but are the much-discussed and controversial "International" designation. |

| | Just wondering why this series is listed as UK while cover says EU and disc (flip over) says made in Germany? |
