| | Now that I know August 7th was a Tuesday, I'm more inclined to believe it, plus it is the date as stated on Universal's site (though I have lately discovered that official sites aren't perfect either!). Universal must have sent a review copy to the Pitchfork reviewer before the release date. |

| | Or it could be something caused by the old mix-up with US versus "International" date formats PhilMH, June 6th (06/08) or 6th August (06/08), June 6th was a Friday, 6th August was a Monday. Maybe somebody added a day to the August date to make it a Tuesday as according to what you posted on This Miracles CD I entered a few weeks back the standard release day in The US was a Tuesday.
Just a thought! |

| | It looks like the actual release page from Hip-O was never archived. Amazon also shows the release date as August 7, but two other sources, Wikipedia and Discogs, say 8 June 2007, with the Discogs entry saying "release date according to Hip-O website". It is possible that the Discogs submitter misread the site, and that 8 June was actually the date it became available for pre-order, and s/he didn't notice the shipping date that would have been listed under the pre-order date. However, I have also found a review on pitchfork.com dated July 17th, which doesn't actually state the release date, but as this review was before August it gives more credence to the June issue date. At least they all agree on the year! |

| | Just a few important notes here for JB fans ...
As explained in Alan Leeds' excellent notes Mr Brown was in conflict with his record label (King) for much of this period and some recordings were issued on the rival Smash/Fontana labels via some legal loopholes in his King contract .... In the meantime King remixed old JB recordings (often with overdubbed sound effects) and released those in an attempt to keep up.
This came to an end with "Papas Got A Brand New Bag" (CD 2: Tracks 11-12) which was issued by King after their dispute with JB was (largely) resolved. Even so Smash continued to release instrumental recordings by Mr Brown for some time afterwards.
CD2 Tracks 9-10 "I Got You" and "Only You" were scheduled for release as Smash 1989 in June 1965 but the 45 was withdrawn.
CD 1 and Tracks 1-2 of CD 2 were 1964 releases.
CD 2 Tracks 3-18 were 1965 releases.
These are "full length" versions of the King and Smash versions of "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" ....

| | The Hip-O Select website is no more, and I'm trying to retrieve it from the Internet Archive, but my ISP seems to be having problems tonight. Universal Music Enterprises says August 7, 2007 for the release date, which I think is right, but I'd like to be able to confirm it from the Hip-O site once I can get into it! |
