ReviewThis is a fascinating collection of Chess/Cadet/Checker recordings that were regular plays on Chicago "Soul" stations WVON and WBEE in the 1960s, compiled by "Chicago Soul Expert" Robert Pruter.
The booklet has an interesting essay by Robert Pruter in which he outlines how WVON, even though owned by Chess records, was limited in the number of Chess/Cadet/Checker releases it could have on its playlist.
Some of the songs on here, notably those by Jackie Ross and Fontella Bass became international hits, others were barely heard outside of Chicago at the time.
Personally I find some of the most interesting inclusions to be the tracks by THE GEMS, whose lead singer ANDREA DAVIS found international acclaim when she changed her name to MINNIE RIPPERTON.
