I now have this on CD, having only had the digital edition in my Google Play library before. On previous listens, I wasn't at all impressed by the majority of the previously unreleased tracks, they are pretty ordinary, to put it kindly, and they are not improved by being on CD. Say what you like about how Motown treated this group and some of their other artists, but sometimes songs were consigned to the vault for a very good reason! This collection might have been helped by the inclusion of two other non-album VIP singles, "Message From A Black Man", and "We'll Have It Made" - and there is ample room on this disc for both of those - but they have been released on previous Spinners CD's, as well as The Complete Motown Singles boxed sets. Still, I think I'll be applying a bit more caution to future Motown vault collections, whether on Ace or directly from Universal, as I think they're scraping the barrel a bit now.
Hmm, tricky one! I believe you when you say that Amazon had the date as the 24th when you ordered this, but they are showing the 31st now! Ace's Facebook page also implies that it was released on the 31st, but maybe they allow Amazon (and others?) to ship it out the day before, so that no-one receives it before the 31st? But then, they ship it out even earlier if it is ordered directly from them, and so can be received earlier than the "official" date? Perhaps that date is intended to be the earliest date of availability in a bricks-and-mortar store? I would still be inclined to go with the 31st as the label's declared date, which might be the date for most copies, but I would like to hear what the admins and mods feel about this. Most Ace/Kent releases would probably be submitted here with their declared date, it's only that person getting their copy on the 29th that has put "a Spaniard in the works", to quote John Lennon!
I'm not 100% certain that the date of 24th August is correct PhilMH as your reasoning for it being the 31st sounds quite compelling. However I ordered it on pre-release from Amazon and I'm sure that they had the anticipated release date as 24th August on their site.
For what it's worth my copy was dispatched by Amazon on 30th August (I received it on the 31st August), and I know of one person who ordered it direct from Kent/Ace who received it on the 29th..
Unusually for an Ace/Kent release, this actually came out on digital before it came out on CD; Motown/Universal retains digital rights for all of Ace/Kent's Motown releases, and in this case it was released for download and streaming on 24th June 2018. Is the CD release date shown here correct? Ace was showing the release date as 31st August (the last Friday of the month, as is usual for that company) on their website up until the day before; I don't know why they remove the dates from the album pages once they come around - when Ace asked for suggestions for upgrading their website last year, I did suggest (on their Facebook page) that they leave the dates on, as that would be much easier than wading through their "releases by month" pages, and someone there replied that it was a good idea, but then they didn't adopt it!
