I won't go into a detailed description of the history of the making of this LP but Columbia Records rushed it out so that they could get another S & G LP on the shelves to support their first huge hit "The Sounds Of Silence". And it shows. Two tracks, "We've Got A Groovy Thing Goin' " and "Somewhere They Can't Find Me" were recorded much earlier in May 1965, and have poppy arrangements unlike the rest of the tunes which are much more folk oriented. The title track was recorded back in 1964 and was buried on their first LP which quickly hit the delete bins until its resurrection. The rest of this record, including overdubs of drums and electric guitar to “The Sounds Of Silence”, was hastily recorded in December 1965. Because of a lack of new material, a lot of these tunes were re-recorded from Paul Simon’s first solo LP recorded in Britain in (I think) mid 1965. This record has some fine moments and could have been a lot better had more time been taken to produce it. It deals with many human emotions and activities including insecurity on "I Am A Rock" and "Leaves That Are Green" and suicide on "A Most Peculiar Man" and "Richard Cory". "I Am A Rock" is a different recording (the vocal at least) than the later mono 45 version. They must have re-recorded it for the single which I think was superior to the version here. Simon & Garfunkel scaled much higher ground with their subsequent releases but despite its flaws this album shows them in the learning process and without the polish of their later material.

(This re-mastered copy is far better than my original CD in that it has informative liner notes and four bonus tracks, only one of which actually was from the December 1965 sessions.)

philmh: duly submitted as a please reflag yeurrp, and please credit philmh for the correction - we shall, no doubt, see. . .

13/12/16 edit: reflagged yeurrp ok, but no philmh correction credit :-(

Discogs seems to have the same copy as you, marked as Europe; SACEM is the French rights society, and BIEM is the umbrella organisation for all the rights societies, so possibly manufactured in France, but as there's a German label code as well, it was probably marketed across Europe. Amazon UK has the release date as 20th August 2001, the day before the US release date of the 21st (a Tuesday, as was usual for the US then). Discogs also has the Australian issue, which has an entirely different barcode. I would make your copy Europe.

thanks, phil; there's a bit more on the reverse of the disc, in a smaller font i cannot be sure of: possibly IFPI 1552

- that's about it. the rights collection non-stamp is printed too small for my eyes, even with specs, but looks like it might combine sacem in a square with biem outside, below the square.

Hi ppint, this catalogue number - in fact, all the Simon & Garfunkel reissues - were released in Australia on September 10th 2001. I imagine that they were probably Australian pressings, but they might well have had the same barcodes as the UK/Europe issues. I will have to dig further to try and find the US and UK issue dates, but they were probably around the same time. The (P) date of 2001 applies to the three previously unissued bonus tracks (determined by year of first release, not year of recording), and a new (C) date applies if there is new pictorial or textual material in the package, as seems likely.

all "simon and garfunkel" artist credit lines should read "simon & garfunkel" as cbs records & columbia records always so styled the duo; already submitted as a group correction.

i've flagged it uk, but it might be eu, or international-outside-of-north-america (& possibly outside of japan - & spain? - apparently; thanks to philmh for pointing out these exceptions to sony music entertainment inc.'s elsewise worldwide ownership of the "columbia" trademark/copyright for music): further advice/correction is welcome.

record release information in the insert booklet is for merkin columbia label releases, and not for cbs records, or sony/columbia uk, eu or international: the original 1966 cbs label uk lp (s)bpg 62690 bore "homeward bound" as side 2, track 1 on the 12 track lp (it would have been track 07 on this cd, had it followed the uk lp, and everything else shuffled up one higher); tracks 12-15 were released in the eu/international boxed cd set, "the collection", columbia 886971346626, 26/11/07.

matrix-equivalent no. 54950812000-0101 12

the (p) & © dates of 2001 are those printed on the rear insert/inlay and in the insert booklet, and seem impossible...
