Stax is the label, and Festival the record company; Festival used consolidated catalogue number series encompassing all its distributed labels, just as US CBS did from about 1970 onwards for Columbia, Epic, Monument, Philadelphia International, etc.

Funny that you made this "Stax". The catalog number actually is for "Festival". The logo for "Festival" is on the back inlay, just not printed on the disc.

This and the later Volume 2 are fairly decent overviews of the classic Memphis soul company, hampered only slightly by the fact that only a few Atlantic-era tracks are included. Only a few years later, Atlantic and Fantasy would issue their complete Stax soul singles boxed sets. This volume also lacks the sleeve notes and photos present on the double LP edition. Also missing is the monologue at the beginning of "Starting All Over Again" - probably a promo 45 edit.

The legal blurb on the back and in the booklet mentions New Zealand as well as Australia. I don't know whether this was actually issued in New Zealand too - if you know, let me know!
