ReviewThis collection is effectively a "Greatest Hits" package of Ian Levine "Northern Soul" orientated productions from the mid '70s to the early '90s and contains many of his most commercially successful efforts including Evelyn Thomas's "Weak Spot" and L.J. Johnson's "Your Magic Put A Spell On Me", both of which made the UK Top 30 in early 1976, and Frances Nero's "Footsteps", which made the UK Top 20 in 1991. Curiously "Reaching For the Best" by The Exciters isn't the version that made the UK Top 40 in 1975 but a re-recording from the 1990s that Mr Levine felt more accurately reflected his original concept of the song.
My personal favourite on here is James Wells' "Baby I'm Still The Same Man", though unfortunately the version on here is the 2:41 edited version and not the elongated version issued in the UK on the "B" side of Polydor 2058 784, which is what I was hoping to hear. My runner up would be the similarly styled "24 Hours A Day" by Barbara Pennington, and I've always had a weak spot (every pun intended) for the two Evelyn Thomas tracks. Other goodies include the 1991 track from Chuck Jackson, which was widely tipped to be a UK hit at the time but unfortunately didn't manage to break Mr. Jackson's UK-Chart duck, and Billy Griffin's plea for racial tolerance.
