Noel, you appear to have got that Oct 25, 1990 date from Amazon - they are sometimes right, and more recent issues are likely to be correct, but for older issues it is wise to try to find another source to verify a date.
Since I last commented on this, I have obtained some MCA catalogues, and their July 1989 edition shows 5316 as the number for LP, cassette and CD versions of this album, so it looks like July 1989 is the latest that the renumbering was done, and Schwann were slow in picking up the change (or MCA were slow in sending Schwann the new details).
Hi GEMSMFAN, the new number is on the disc, right at the bottom, and the Motown Record Company, L.P. name is there too, so goodbear66 was right to list this under the new number. Even if it still had been a disc with the original number, I think that we should still document a new valid catalogue number as assigned by the company that released it, however that number is applied - and MCA did a lot of this stickering in this period, restoring order to their previous chaotic practice of having separate numbers for LPs, cassettes and CDs.
I realize you bought this under the new number, but I would've stuck with the original catalog number and original release date... 1987, since that was how this was manufactured. The new number only is applied to the back of the case. The spines, disc, etc. all don't have the change. The new number should be an unlinked alternate. This is the same as calling a commercial release (with bar code), a "promo" merely because the manufacturer stickered it as such. The change is just because the Label changed owners. The info of this really belongs in "Notes". If you replace the case (say, if it gets damaged), it would be like an original...
I would say that the 1987 release date applies to the original catalogue number MCDO9034MD as issued by Motown Record Corporation, as shown on the back inserts. The renumbering to MOTD-5316 (in line with the vinyl version) occurred after MCA's and Boston Ventures' late 1988 purchase of Motown, which then became Motown Record Company, L.P. as shown on the disc. Looking in my collection of Schwann catalogues, the winter 1990/91 issue still had this as MOTD-9034, but then Spring 1991 shows MOTD-5316, so I would make this 1991.
