| | ReviewOften cited as one of the best, and most important albums of the 90s...
(I'm begining to lose count of the number of albums that have that kind of claim attached to them - got to be approaching a meaningless statement now (?))
... and it is certainly very good.
I missed it first time around, as any artist with "DJ" this, or "DJ" that was always a bad buy in my experience... lots of crappy scratching and other highly unoriginal posturing overlaying very poor "songwiriting", much like the rubbish Jay-Zed and Kanye believe this guy still has a job West shovel out on an almost daily basis, except when pausing only to inform us of how fabulously wealthy and awesome their lives are... compared to yours, of course....
... But this is best described, I think, as Ambient Hip-Hop.
The kind of album that makes you want to roll a nice fat carrot and contemplate the ceiling in the wee small hours from the comfort of your sofa.
Noted for being constructed almost entirely from samples from Mr Shadow's record collection, you might add the description: "deep-funk" to it too, on occasion (a curious mix, I'll grant). It sounds very organic as opposed to an artificial, "produced" affair.
The "Transmissions" are just that, little radio like transmission interludes at the end of their respective tracks, that these tunes dissolve into, and one highlight, that made me laugh, is the 45 second track: "Why Hip Hop Sucks In '96", where the only lyric is:
"....It's The Money".
Perhaps this album's influence through the intervening years has lessened the originality to our ears, as, having been copied multiple times in the work of others, it's very familiar, but it's still one of, if not the best.
If only I'd known!
Well worth getting, and may get repeated plays over time, when the mood strikes.

| | Actually I think that's a better idea than what I've done, I only added the dashes because I didn't really know what to do with these "tracks"... I'll do that greg, thanks.
(I suppose I ought to get around to listening to the thing eventually, to find out what they are! ... this is one of those I heard a lot of noise about way back when, but never got around to trying... so 21 years later........ :) |

| | Understood MM,just a misunderstanding,it looks better that way:)
Dare i make an observation though?,would it not be better written thus?...
04 - Changeling / **Transmission 1
07 - Stem / Long Stem / **Transmission 2
13 - What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 1-Blue Sky Revisit) / **Transmission 3
(as the three "Transmissions" are effectively just extra tracks)
Anyhow,i'll leave it up to you, there are plenty of other more important things to worry about;) |

| | I wasn't suggesting you were suggesting copying the discogs way, just observing that they have that facility there to subdivide tracks, which is a different thing to our sectionbreaks.
...I've changed this entry though, by just appending the transmissions to the end of previous tracks, as mentioned, that way the track numbering lines up at least, which I think is more accurate. |

| | ?Misunderstanding MM,i didn't mean add tracks as decimals?,just like this ...
Track
01/ - Best Foot Forward
02/ - Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt
03/ - The Number Song
04/ - Changeling
05/ - Transmission 1
06/ - What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 4)
07/ - Untitled
08/ - Stem / Long Stem
09/ - Transmission 2
10/ - Mutual Slump
11/ - Organ Donor
12/ - Why Hip Hop Sucks In '96
13/ - Midnight In A Perfect World
14/ - Napalm Brain / Scatter Brain
15/ - What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 1 - Blue Sky Revisit)
16/ - Transmission 3
Although this does not match the tracklisting on the artwork, doing it this way represents accurately what the actual CD running order is. |

| | Hmmm... unfortunately, we can't add decimals of a track like disco-dogs: 13.1, and 13.2 etc.
I think I may remove the sectionbreaks, then just append them to their respective previous tracks - still doesn't seem correct to me, but it's probably better than what I've done here.
(I shall await the views of others before changing it, so as not to have to keep messing about with it) |

| | Looking at the one on Discogs,they list the Transmission 1/2/3 as tracks,i.e Transmission 1 after track 4 (0:35 duration),Transmission 2 after track 7 (1:29 duration) and Transmission 3 after track 13 (1:11 duration).
Using our method of listing (each track with a separate line) then they would be entered thus :
Transmission 1 track 05
Transmission 2 track 09
Transmission 3 track 16
I don't think there is a track 14?,i think 13 is just "What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 1-Blue Sky Revisit)
And track 06 is "Untitled" (0:24 duration)
Hope that makes sense MM (you see don't i;) |

| | Well here's a new and unexpected problem...
what if you need to add a sectionbreak at the end of a track, instead of the beginning?
Currently, the site does not support this, but as you can see, the: "transmission" bits are not part of the track listing (not numbered) and "Transmission 3" comes at the end, with no tracks following it, strongly suggesting that all of the "transmissions" are not headings for groups of tracks.
Any thoughts on how best to present this?
(I can't say I'm happy having an empty track 14, which is not listed, just to accommodate a sectionbreak) |
