Return To Pepperland is a cancelled Paul McCartney album recorded during 1986-1987. The album consists of early demos and studio recorded tracks with Phil Ramone producing. Most of these tracks remain unreleased officially, whilst others (notably Beautiful Night and This One) were re-recorded. Only a handful crept on to various CD single B-sides more than 10 years later almost all having been re-worked and re-recorded. Tracks 3, 6, 7, 8 and 16 are demos.

The album was a reflection of work from McCartney's career as a member of the Beatles. Although it was made around twenty years after the release of the Beatles' 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (which inspired it). It also includes a re-working of the Beatles Lennon-McCartney written Love Me Do / P.S. I Love You and Don't Break The Promise co-written with Eric Stewart (from the band 10cc) who McCartney collaborated with extensively in the mid-1980s. Paul plays all instruments and performs all lead vocals with the exception of Ringo Starr - drums on Beautiful Night and Linda McCartney - keyboards and backing harmony vocals.

It is not known with any certainty why Paul pulled the release of Return To Pepperland. It has been speculated that he was not happy with the way the album was progressing as a cohesive unit along with the contemporary 80's sound production of many completed tracks. With Paul having virtual complete say with regards to his creative output it has also been suggested he simply shelved the idea of a Sgt. Pepper themed album twenty years after the release of the original for fear of being criticised as to be seen as commercially capitalizing of the 20th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. No definitive explanation has ever been given.
