RogerFoster 27th May 2016		Review This release combines Curtis Mayfield's two "Sound Track" LPs, the hugely successful "Super Fly" from 1972 (#1 on Billboard's US R&B and "Pop" LP Charts for a month towards the end that year) and the financially disastrous "Short Eyes" from 1977 (which only attained a miserly #59 on Billboard's US R&B chart and totally missed out on their "Pop" listings). In both instances the soundtrack LPs fared much better than their associated films. "Superfly" was about Hard Drugs and is quite well known whereas the little known "Short Eyes", according to the notes with this release, "Short Eyes" is/was street-slang for Paedophilia and was apparently set in a New York detention house known as "The Tombs". Apparently Curtis Mayfield invested heavily in the "Short Eyes" movie and its total failure eventually led to the collapse of his record company. Given the contentious subject material of "Short Eyes" it is hardly surprising that with this release Sequel presented it as a reissue of "Superfly" with a bonus disc containing "Short Eyes". What is a bit strange is that they changed the title of the 1972 LP from the two word "Super Fly" to the one word "Superfly", I wonder if they ever realised that they did that? 3 people found this review helpful.   ✔︎ Helpful Review?
