It isn't titled "Heathen Chemistry" even though it has the artwork from that album and, I'd be tempted to just call it "Oasis" as it doesn't appear to have its own title as such.

Is it the equivalent of a cover CD then? Should the title perhaps simply be Oasis as that's all that appears on the CD and packaging? Sometimes more knowledge is a dangerous thing for instance knowing the album this is promoting. Another mystery is why this band didn't (and Britpop for that matter) didn't travel so well outside the UK. Only later when Damon Albarn created the Gorillaz did he crack the international market and Oasis in spite of a huge industry push in the States never really made it.

We're Oasis like the Purple Hearts and had to go home cos' they missed their fish and chips or other home comforts? It mystifies me as to why Oasis were huge in Britain and relatively insignificant everywhere else. Could it be that they actually were no good and really just all hype with no real substance? We're they worse than the MOR stadium plodders U2? Thinks....

@MM. So these promo's aren't promo's?,another worthwhile debate there then;)

Sorry folks - after all that, site policy makes a ruling: It's a CD album.

(has been changed accordingly)

((although tehcnically, according to another debate.... this might not even qualify as an album:))

 ah - this:
is not the full album,
does not bear the album title as its title, nor tells readers of its imminent/current release,
went to all purchasers of that issue of the newspaper to promote the sales of the album ?:

but this has still got to be a promotional copy in 45cat's, lpcat's and cdcat's normal sense of a promotional copy?

Actually, is there anything to say this should be titled Heathen Chemistry?

this has "For Promotional Use Only" on disc and sleeve,

...Was not for sale in it's own right,

... is not the full album available for purchase.

(does not have the same number of tracks, and some of the tracks it does have are not the album tracks).

some - not actually many, that i've met - were indeed intended to promote forthcoming tours by the bands in question, and some of these, sales of a cd album simultaneous with the tour; but contrariwise, yr hmbl srppnt. is extremely doubtful many oasis fans had the faintest idea an already-released cd album would be bundled with that weekend/fortnight/month's issue of the sunday times, or the new statesman, or fox & hounds (or whatever) - nor be checking out the cover of the week's issue of the radio times, or jackie, nor true confessions, nor readers' wives°, just in case there was an oasis cd they'd already bought bundled with it. . .

° - though they may've been in the habit of checking out this last - for other reasons, it prob'ly wasn't, in the newsagents... (- does "tit-bits" still exist? we used to see copies when my big & little brothers had to go to the barber's for their beginning-of-school-termly (?) haircuts - and nowhere else) (dentists had "punch", and "the lady", and "the new elizabethan", and the doctor's had some of these, and "country life" iirc, and the "reader's digest"; and either might have "private eye" - but never the occasional/christmas flex-idisc...)

One that could do with looking at again perhaps?,i can understand where you're coming from in saying that you may still pay for the newspaper/magazine regardless of what's attached, but then again,i would imagine that many Oasis fans bought that Sunday Times (which might not have been their regular paper),just because of the attached Oasis CD.So however you look at it,these CD's were/are used in a promotional context, not in the traditional sense perhaps,i.e sent to a DJ,but i'm pretty sure a lot of these CD's were also intended to promote an upcoming UK/European tour (as such promoting the artist's work),as well as boost newspaper sales,as they often seem to coincide. One to chew over perhaps, for me though, they were used as physical promotional aids to sell said papers/magazines,otherwise,it would have,"Send away for Oasis CD" or suchlike on the front of the paper, and are therefore, promo's unto themselves.(just throwing it out there;)

yes: e.g. at university radio york, we definitely did not pay for apcs from the record companies°; whereas, ttbomk, everyone has to pay for their copy of the issue of the newspaper or whatever that the cd or dvd comes bundled with - even if these are not physically attached.

° - though from time-to-time, someone had to write and confirm - on properly mastheaded paper - that we still existed, and still played their records, and still wished to receive these and their pr sheets - and for a year, this someone was mostly yr hmbl srppnt. . .

Some clarification is probably needed here.
I would guess that the vast majority of 'newspaper CDs' have been entered as standard cd albums. Click on say Daily Mail as an example. I think I initially submitted these CDs as promos, but a comment was made that they differed from most promos in that money was paid for the newspaper/magazine that issued the CD; thereafter I subsequently added these as CD albums.
Either way, if a policy is confirmed, there could be 100s of entries to tidy up.

@ppint.Surely their still promo's aren't they?,whether used to promote an artists work as is the norm,or,as they are used here,to promote sales of newspapers (i'm sure they wouldn't go to the expense of including them if they diidn't think they might boost their sales;).

um. but the normal 45cat, 33cat, etc. usage of promo is to indicate an apc - advance promotional copy - or a dj promo copy - disc-jockey promotional copy - or a radio promotional copy - of a single (or an album) promoting the present or forthcoming on-sale release or "stock" copy of musical recordings - which these almost never are.

these cds & dvds are much closer to the special editions produced for sale to readers digest magazine subscribers and newsstand buyers (if these still exist), and as used to be available to subscribers to and newsagent customers of "private eye". . . - and the doctor who cds of radio series' episodes can't possibly have promoted the sales of the daily wail (was it? or the stun?), or the radio times... - can they?

Should this, and the other Sunday Times Oasis discs be classified as "promo"?

I wasn't sure what to call this and was tempted to give it the simple name "Oasis". However, as it was brought out to promote their impending "Heathen Chemistry" CD I decided to go with that, though nowhere is the title "Heathen Chemistry" used!!
