Originally Paul McCartney and Wings were scheduled to start making an LP with Paul’s brother, Mike McGear, in December 1973, but the sessions were delayed until the following month. In January 1974, at the suggestion of George Harrison, the crew assembled at 10cc’s Strawberry Studios to record a batch of songs that were nothing if not Paul McCartney compositions, regardless of whose name was on the credits. In addition to writing the vast majority of tunes and playing most of the instruments, Paul also sang extremely audible background vocals; therefore, for all intents and purposes, McGear was the 1974 Paul McCartney and Wings LP. Unfortunately, when the album was issued in the UK in September 1974, prefaced by the Leave It single in August, it was anything but a Wings LP when it came to its commercial performance; it didn’t even dent the charts. Perhaps playing up the McCartney angle a bit more in the promotion would have helped its fate, but Mike to his credit wanted it to stand on its own merits.

Given the foregoing, some consider this a “lost” Wings album.

JPGR&B SUBS 19th Dec 2018		Cherry Red Records and Esoteric Recordings are going to be re-releasing McGear in February 2019 according to Mike McGear - hear more about this in an interview with Richard Oliff from Tuesday 11 December 2018, where Mike talks about the invention, creation and animation of The Weirdos, and about the forthcoming re-release of the 1974 album McGear. It will be a Super Deluxe vinyl release with DVD, as well as on CD.
