Notes

Harmony soft rock trio from New York State who signed with The Beatles' Apple Records in 1968 on the strength of George Harrison’s say so.

The second LP of their career was due for release in the summer of 1969 but was pulled at the last minute due to changes at Apple. The tapes have sat in the vaults ever since.

RPM releases for the first time the LP that should have been the release straight after The Iveys LP in the Apple Records catalogue.

Mastered from the original tapes, the recordings were originally produced by Peter Asher with additional arrangements by Richard Hewson.

Bearing a photo taken by Peter Asher, this is from a previously unseen cache of photos archived by Apple, a select few of which adorn the CD booklet.

The LP title track is the song given to Mortimer by Paul McCartney which The Beatles later recorded as Two Of Us.

The CD also includes the songs recorded during the sessions but which were not slated for the original LP, including album versions of ‘Christine Tildsley’ and ‘Ingenue’s Theme.’

Now I have this, It's fascinating to hear after all these years. Two of Us/On Our Way Home, I was initially disappointed by due to the vocal, but it's starting to grow on me. Mortimer didn't have the advantage of hearing the Let It Be version and based theirs on a Get Back rehearsal (hence the odd mis-translation of the lyric, eg, Longer than the road that stretches out of here). Track 2, I Didn't Know, is a great track - the arrangement reminds me of James Taylor, Something's Wrong.

They issued the Lon & Derrek Van Eaton album too, a couple of years ago. Maybe they'll come up with another at some point - Elephant's Memory haven't found their way onto CD yet...

Yes Cherry Red very kindly put me on their mailing list so I get sent a half dozen releases every month to add to the website. I've only listened to it once so far but it sounds quite nice if not earth shattering.

Here is a fascinating short trailer documentary for the album with some of the background to the album including an interview with band member Tony Van Benschoten.
