Thanks for your input on this one people but when entered it I put in the notes " most likely made for UK market but no real proof on the packaging so just listed as France..." and followed it with invitation for whovever checks the entry to feel free to alter the country as I'm most likely wrong. I know See For Miles is a UK company (albeit run by an American) but a catalogue address is not really a lot to go on when entering a CD.
Here be an import! Yes, available in Australia, but only via the import distributors Another Record Distribution and Monkey Music Distribution, facts probably only known to shop owners and/or subscribers to Platterlog! (I have never owned a shop - I subscribed to Platterlog from 1988 to 2008 as a private individual, they didn't care where their money came from!). The "International" releases are more likely to come from the majors, so indie and reissue labels like this are less likely to have Australian licensing deals (but that's not a hard and fast rule - Shock Records, for example, seemed to be a mixture of importer and licensee). So yes, another illustration of why scrapping the country field might help you, Lee! Addresses and such on the package may be clues - a lot of major releases tend to list overseas parent company names and addresses wherever they are released, but if an indie like this one lists an address in a particular country, then you can pretty well assume that their primary (or only) market is that country, regardless of where it was pressed (I am constantly having to correct Discogs entries for Ace releases that show the country as Germany or France, because much of their 80s and 90s vinyl was pressed in those countries).
Nothing on this CD indicates Australia as place issued. Australia might be place distributed.
See for Miles is UK label, there is UK address to send money for the releases catalog. Even if you purchased this CD in Australia, you still had to send money to UK for the catalog.
I really don't think that where release can be purchased should have anything to do with the place issued.
I wouldn't bother with discogs or any other site to figure it out if particular CD was released/distributed anywhere else. I'd just stick with the info that is available on the release.
Thanks Alenko but by what sort of telepathic powers am I meant to know this information from my house in Australia? I would list it as International as all the See For Miles releases were available in Australia as well. I have the vinyl See For Miles releases of the Pretty Things and several other acts from back in the early 80's and these series were freely available here and always have been. So See For Miles has never been just a UK concern as far as I know from it's inception it targeted specific markets around the globe. So difficult to know from my perspective.
Discogs lists as France, bought mine in Australia reg. price, most likely made for UK market but no real proof on the packaging. If it is UK or Europe and I bought it in Australia what is it? Went with labeling on this one but most likely wrong but I'm used to that.
