Notes

Inspired by the musical and personal "fit" of the band put together by Donal Lunny for Christy Moore's solo LP, prosperous (q.v.), the musicians promptly decided that they were a more permanent band, and adopted the name, Planxty. they were Liam O'Flynn, Andy Irvine, Donal Lunny and Christy Moore. signing with Coulter-Martin enterprises, they eventually discovered the management absorbed about as much as their three lps for polydor ever earned or could ever earn and, after Christy Moore returned to the band he had left, and a stunning farewell tour featuring both him and Paul Brady as twin lead vocalists, split.
produced by Phil coulter, according to credit on original 1973 polydor lp, not credited here on cd or inserts; engineered by Barry
Ainsworth. remastering uncredited.
si bheag, si mhor ((the battle between the inhabitants of) the big
fairy hill (and) the little fairy hill) is reputed to be o carolan's first composition. the reel following the jolly beggar was trivially readily identifiable to a drunken musician in the Lancaster Irish folk scene who accidentally killed himself, alas. the authorship of follow me up to Carlow, if not necessarily the composership of the music to which it is set*, is Patrick Joseph McCall, 1861-1919, who entitled it the marching song of Feagh MacHugh (* supposedly first played in 1580 by the pipers of Feagh MacHugh).
disc bears (p) 1990 Shanachie record corp, b. insert bears (p) 1989 Shanachie international corp.
