RogerFoster 2nd Feb 2016		Review Some of these Trojan box sets are just as interesting for the accompanying essays as they are for the actual music and this has to be one of them!! This 2002 compilation is a collection of Jamaican recordings that had been popular on London's "Mod" scene during the 1980s and 1990s. Needless to say the London "Mod" scene at that time was very small and so the essay gives a fascinating glimpse into a world where people consciously attempted to recreate the spirit of 1964, meeting in pubs on the fringes of Central London, basement clubs in Soho or "invitation only" events where the only people who got to hear about them were those deemed to dress and dance well enough!! Musically the collection covers a broad selection of 1960s Jamaican music ... Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae plus a couple of Novelty-Calypso efforts from Lord Kitchener. As with many of these Trojan collections song-writer credits are sometimes a bit sketchy and "Unknown" gets mentioned on a number of occasions, perhaps if the compilers of this collection were familiar with Marvin Gaye's duets with Tammi Terrell some of these mysterious songwriters could have been identified. :) 3 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review?
