An interesting selection of original Jamaican recordings from the 1960s, plus an essay that documents the development of "Ska" (a predominant popular musical style in Jamaica in the mid 1960s), out of a local attempt to emulate 1950s New Orleans R&B, through to the fading away of the Ska sound in 1966/67 in favour of slower, more melodic, music that became known as "Rocksteady".
Ska made some impact outside of Jamaica, particularly in England, and three of the tracks on here ("007", "Guns Of Navarone" and "Train To Skaville") made the UK Pop charts in 1967. And as acknowledged in the notes, the Ska style experienced a revival at the end of the 1970s when hugely popular English acts such as Madness and The Specials based their own music upon it.
In reality some of the later tracks on here, such as Desmond Dekker's "007", The Tartans "What Can I Say", Lloyd and Glen's "Jezebel" and The Paragons "The Tide Is High" could more properly be called Rocksteady, but the term "Ska" hung on till well into 1967, as can be witnessed by The Ethiopians "Train To Skaville" from 1967.
