I don't think they ever really improved on BoC Maxima (not featured here - yet - but large chunks of which were re-worked for this). That was a stunning album.
Undeniably Boards of Canada sound, but a much more subdued tine than other albums... It is arguably more bleak, seeing as it's subject is a kind of apocalypse - though not a violent, man made one, but rather an environmental collapse and wasteland scenario - but it does lack some of the more spikey bits of other albums... the "knees and elbows" that jab at your brain.
The second half of the album picks up a bit though, with the broken bounce of Palace Posey, and the bubbly New Seeds being highlights.
I detected a sustained chord which could be from the Blade Runner soundtrack at the beginning, strong elements of Daft Punk's Tron Legacy score peppered throughout, and a very Terminator 2 Vibe at the end. All underscored and overlayed by their own sound.
But I have to say this sounds a little flat compared to others of theirs, and maybe they've run out, or are running out of ideas... they need some new tricks, in order not to exhaust this sound in future.
