This release is the EU version of the US CD MOTD-5167 and shares artwork with that release (rather than the later re-issue on 3746351672). MOTD-5167 was itself derived from the 2ON1 CD MCD08024MD and shares some artwork with that release as well as the "reciprocal" cover from "Two Lovers" which was the accompanying album on the 2fer. This is a common feature with several of the MOTD single album releases that had previously been released on the original 2 albums on 1 CD series but it does not occur when the first stand alone CD album was in the 9000 series (typically as A Motown Compact Classic) in which case the MOTD shares some of the artwork with that version. Releases in the 37463XXXX2 series were later re-issues and don't usually employ all the same artwork. The front covers will usually be the same though not always..
I would think that February 1991 is very likely; numerically this was towards the end of the ZL/WL 72000 series, and in January 1992 the Motown license transferred to PolyGram.
I would guess that the year of release of this is 1989, it certainly isn't listed in the Discography in the Sharon Davis book "Motown The History" where the last UK/European LP listed is WL/K 72630 "Farewell My Summer Love" by Michael Jackson, released in June 1988.
A date of 1986 does get mentioned on the insert and inlay but that most likely refers to the date when the tracks were digitally remastered to be part of the Toofer "Two Lovers"/"My Guy" issued by US Motown in August 1986.
My theory is that this was a pared-down version of the 1986 US Motown toofer that only included the "My Guy" LP ... my evidence for that being that the spare page in the 4 page insert (image #1013547) used the artwork from the "Two Lovers" LP. Presumably the suits at Motown/Europe thought that "Two Lovers" wasn't well enough known to be included.
