LaurenceD SUBS 21st Aug 2022 | | CD AlbumRandy Newman - The Randy Newman Songbook Vol. 1 (2003) | My copy is missing the slipcase with the barcode...
|
LaurenceD SUBS 9th Aug 2022 | | CD AlbumMichael Nesmith - ... Tropical Campfire's ... (1994) | The apostrophe in the title, which was quoted verbatim from the notes (see insert), was removed in later releases.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 9th Aug 2022 | | CD AlbumMichael Nesmith - The Prison (1990) | I like the fact that Michael credits each kindergarten class member for their artwork.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 20th Jul 2022 | | CD AlbumNick Lucas - Tip-toe Thru' The Tulips (2000) | I have to give credit to the people involved for a great job of transcribing and restoring these recordings. The sound quality is wonderful.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 17th Jul 2022 | | CD AlbumProcol Harum - A Whiter Shade Of Pale | I don't know the precise release date for this, but I seem to recall having purchased it in 1985 or 1986.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 27th May 2022 | | CD AlbumMojo Nixon And Skid Roper - Bo-Day-Shus!!! (1987) | This one appears to have been issued for sale in the USA, UK and Europe.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 16th May 2022 | | CD AlbumThe Surf Coasters - Outside Break (2008) | Stumbled across this CD and became an instant fan; only regret is that it took me so long to find out about this band.
Fivenine Factory is a Japanese label, but it looks like this was released specifically for the USA (printed in Canada) in anticipation of their September 2008 west coast tour, which began in Seattle and ended in El Segundo. I think that the CD was available for purchase at the gigs.
This release is similar to their Japanese "Breakout" CD, with a couple of different tracks.
If you're a fan of surf rock, I give this (and their earlier releases) a strong recommendation.

LaurenceD SUBS 5th May 2022 | | CD AlbumRandy Newman - Trouble In Paradise (1983) | From Cash Box June 25, 1983, page 8: "Warner/Elektra/Atlantic Corp. recently announced its initial releases of Compact Digital (CD) Audio Discs, set to be out on Aug 1."
I have included a snippet from the Cash Box article which lists all of those releases.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 5th May 2022 | | CD AlbumRandy Newman - James And The Giant Peach (1996) | "My Name Is James", "That's The Life", "Eating The Peach" and "Family" are sung by various cast members. "Good News" is sung by Randy Newman. The remaining tracks are instrumental.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 5th May 2022 | | CD AlbumRandy Newman - Randy Newman's "Faust" (1995) | I attended Randy's solo benefit performance at the La Jolla Playhouse around the time of Faust's premier. Attendees were given a copy of this CD. He played several numbers from the musical along with his more familiar songs. It sounded like many of the cast members were in attendance as well; you could hear them responding to his inside jokes about the production.
I also attended one performance of the musical itself, which I enjoyed, although I tended to agree with the L.A. Times review, which stated that the show needed some tightening up here & there.
I'm sorry to say however, that after seeing the show, and hearing Randy's renditions, this album sounds rather bland in comparison, and I have trouble warming up to it.

LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Apr 2022 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - V-Disc (1992) | There was an additional 2-disc set (OPCD-4538) of V-Disc recordings released. Looks like these two sets were available for purchase separately, as the booklet for this set does not reference the other set.
A nice selection of tracks, well researched and annotated, with one flaw: all of the recordings have been 'rechanneled' for stereo.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 22nd Feb 2022 | | CD AlbumRed Holloway - Legends Of Acid Jazz (1998) | I admit that I don't quite know what constitutes acid jazz, but I'm pretty sure that these tracks from the 1960s don't fit that description. Anyway, once you get past that artwork, there is some pretty good music to be found in the Prestige "Legends of Acid Jazz" series; I think that they are all twofers like this one.

LaurenceD SUBS 22nd Jan 2022 | | CD AlbumJerry Lee Lewis - 18 Original Greatest Hits (1988) | The first issue (RNCD 5255) has a different barcode, so I created a new entry for that one and linked it.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 22nd Jan 2022 | | CD AlbumJerry Lee Lewis - 18 Original Greatest Hits (1984) | No barcode on my copy, but other versions with this cat# do have it, so I have filled in that field in advance. [Mod: no barcode = no barcode]
|
LaurenceD SUBS 16th Jan 2022 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - Artist's Choice: Elvis Costello (2005) | Track 5 "Oh Well Part 1" is actually a shortened juxtaposition of parts 1 & 2, which I had not heard before.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 16th Jan 2022 | | CD AlbumRed Norvo - Dance Of The Octopus (1995) | A nice collection of early sides from Norvo. Two tracks (16 & 17) feature vocals by Mae Questel from 1936.
Here is "The Broken Record": [YouTube Video]
|
LaurenceD SUBS 16th Jan 2022 | | CD AlbumEmmylou Harris - Wrecking Ball (1995) | This one is very similar to the UK release, except for the barcode. Also there is this information from the disc runout (see image 2860854):
GRACD 102 / DCM Sweden / 10082910 / ifpi L051
So I have entered it as Swedish, though I suppose it was sold throughout Scandinavia.

LaurenceD SUBS 7th Jan 2022 | | CD AlbumJohn Lennon, Yoko Ono, Klaus Voorman, Phil Spector, Ringo Starr, Allen Ginsberg - John Lennon's 31st Birthday Party (1989) | Kind of like listening to the Beach Boys Party! LP, except that this was an actual party...
|
LaurenceD SUBS 7th Jan 2022 | | CD AlbumJohn Lennon - The Lost Lennon Tapes Vol. 1 (1989) | Looks like they borrowed the front pic from the BAG 5073 LP, but the contents are quite different.

LaurenceD SUBS 21st Dec 2021 | | CD AlbumThe Cumberland Trio - Lost And Found (2013) | Not to be confused with The Cumberland Three... :-)
|
LaurenceD SUBS 27th Oct 2021 | | CD AlbumThe Byrds - Sweetheart Of The Rodeo (1997) | There is a hidden track about 1 minute after the end of #19: sounds like a radio ad for the SOTR LP.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 3rd Oct 2021 | | CD AlbumThe Halibuts - Chumming (1993) | I think that this Flatfish CD was the original local release, before being issued on Upstart for wider distribution.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 27th Jul 2021 | | CD AlbumElvis Presley - Elvis (2007) | The second disc containing the August 21 1969 concert is the main reason to track down this release.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 27th Jul 2021 | | CD AlbumGerry Mulligan Quartet - Pleyel Concert Vol. 2 (1996) | This is quickly becoming a favorite of mine; inspired performance, good sound quality and an attentive and enthusiastic audience. Looking forward to hearing Volume 1.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 24th Jul 2021 | | CD AlbumMonty Python - Monty Python's Contractual Obligation Album (2006) | This version omits the track "Farewell To John Denver". Instead, track 8 "Medical Love Song" includes a 30-second bit at the end ("The item which follows has been omitted on legal advice", etc.) which i think is actually a bit longer than the omitted track.
Note the 'Martydom' typo on track 12 listings for this release.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 4th Jul 2021 | | CD AlbumLalo Guerrero - Lalo Guerrero's Greatest Parodies (1998) | SOS = Sounds Of Sancho
Note that these are all new recordings, not the original singles.
Daniel A. Castro, AKA Sancho, was the host of the "Sancho Show" on KPCC, the Pasadena City College radio station. If I remember correctly, this release was the brainchild of Sancho, with the proceeds going to local charities. I purchased this not long after its release directly from Sancho's website.
As to the absence of "Pancho Lopez" on this collection: I think that this may have to do with some legal issues resulting from Lalo's 1955 single on the Real label. As I understand it, clearance had not been obtained for the use of the "Davy Crockett" song from Wonderland, and so Lalo Guerrero and Walt Disney met and agreed to split the royalties from the Real single. However, Guerrero also signed an agreement which prevented him from releasing any more recordings of that song (although it seems that a few did leak out here and there).

LaurenceD SUBS 4th Jul 2021 | | CD AlbumKatmandu - A Case For The Blues (1985) | I included this release with the German Platinum label, but note the mention of "Made in France by MPO". As I understand it, this Platinum label was based in Switzerland, a subsidiary of Astan Music AG. They contracted out the manufacturing of their CDs to various firms in Germany, France and the Netherlands if I'm not mistaken.
Here is a story from Billboard, Dec 28 1985 "50 Tons of Disks Seized in German, Swiss Raids" which describes some trouble they encountered over licensing issues.

LaurenceD SUBS 22nd Jun 2021 | | CD AlbumFleetwood Mac - They Play On (1990) | According to the BBC website, this was actually recorded at the Paris Theatre in March 1970.
I recorded my own copy of this concert from an FM radio broadcast, and this boot sounds like the same broadcast... only things missing are the station breaks, and a few bits of dialog between songs. I'm guessing that the source for the broadcast was this BBC transcription disc.
On the plus side, for this release they did include all of the introductions and commentary from host Dave Symonds, which I think were omitted from the 'official' release.
On the minus side, it sounds like someone used a noise filter to remove hiss from the broadcast, and as a result some of the quieter parts (especially during World In Harmony & Green Manalishi) have been rendered inaudible.
Also, track 8 is actually the Willie Dixon song "You Need Love", from a different BBC broadcast ca. 1968.
