Thanks for posting that Graham... nice to know it wasn't just something I mis-remembered.
... On a similar note, I recall the tablois totally and equally wilfully misunderstanding the point of The Verve's: The Drugs Don't Work. Holding it up as your common or garden anti-drugs song. They were of course lauded to the rafters for this (Unlike poor Pulp), when I'm fairly sure that's not what the substance of the song was about at all... the title being only an observation about a aspect of some broader situation.
But hey, I might be wrong.
The lesson in each case seems to be however: Stop buying newspapers (It only encourages them to print more of their wisdom)
See acrylicafternoons for more about "the wrap", the Daily Mirror's "Ban This Sick Stunt" front page of 20th September, 'Pulp in Britpop's First Ban' from Melody Maker, 30 September, and response.
Here's Mis-Shapes, on TOTP, Jarvis picks up a copy of the Mirror with the headline and pretends to read, approx 2:40 in (not great audio).
And while I'm here, here's "Sorted" from Glastonbry 1995, including Jarvis's preamble.
.
I used to have this... but sold it in a boot fair clear-out.
There was a lot of Hoo-Ha (adopt your best Al Pacino voice for that expression) at the time over the cover as I recall, over the depiction of a speed wrap on the front...I do even recollect a tabloidal campaign to have it withdrawn... does anyone know if that succeeded?
