The real giveaway sign is the same colour printing of "Promotional Copy Not For Sale" direct to the CD. This is not a sticker or later addition to the pressing of the CD (burning?), but rather integral to the only pressing of the CD which took place. There may only have been 100 or 200 done (see Nimbus and its low number offers) and at the time of the printing on the CD all copies had the "Promotional Copy" printed. These singles were never available in the shops and are pretty difficult to find. If you ever find one, it will certainly have either the promotional information printed on the CD (90%) or a promotional stamp on the insert (9%) or a sticker on the packaging (0.999%) - if you ever find a CD single on the Tara label which has no sign of it being a promotional item, either it slipped through at production stage or someone swapped the packaging over.

I repeat, these were not sold as singles but were used exclusively, to promote the albums they were taken from...

On this particular release, I notice there is a printed (unprinted) blank area inside the cover for a stamp to be made: "Distributed by:" which could only be for promotion purposes.

I don't think a copy intended for sale would have that...

...but the barcode is a puzzler.

(Her other CD doesn't seem to have this though)

One (possible) way of clearing this up might be to talk to Nimbus, the manufacturer of this CD single. I suspect that the answer we're looking for is that despite the lack of need of barcode on this particular run of singles, it was standard to supply any commercially produced CD with a barcode, regardless if it was actually used or not. Nimbus often do quite small runs for lower budget bands etc. and they would have the know-how to inform the client that whatever your intentions, it is a good idea to supply all product with a barcode to allow any shop or reseller to use a scanner to keep track of what had been sold.

In the case where the client chose to give the CD away to promote a different product, it was no skin off Nimbus's nose and no worry to Tara either. How would they know that 20 years later we'd be scratching our heads trying to work out why it happened?

My point is simply that you won't find a copy of this anywhere that isn't a promo. You're welcome to try, but since I've spent the last 30 years looking and not found one yet, we can assume that they're all promos. In fact every Tara CD single issued was released to support the sales of the album. Tara 7" 45rpm singles are another matter.

Life's too short, indeed!

Made promo only. Life's too short to argue the toss. But I stick to my point about barcodes.

I don't know what your point is? I know for a categorical fact, having spoken personally to the owner of the company, John Cook that no Tara CD single was ever issued as a CD single but only used for promotional purposes and the CD itself is stamped at production point with "Promotional Copy Not For Sale" at the time of the printing of ALL other information on the CD. Such was the business plan of Tara, they did not promote CD singles and all were used to sell and promote the sales of their albums. Each single itself mentions the album it is taken from and the singles were ONLY sent to radio stations and record stores in order to sell the albums.

The presence of a bar code in no way disproves what I am stating.

If this is a promo only, why is there a sales barcode?

"Promotional Copy Not For Sale" shows clearly on the cd - all CD singles issued by Tara were ONLY available as Promos. I have this from John Cook himself.

One of two excellent singles by Rita Connolly with Shaun Davey.
