Magic Marmalade 18th Jun 2021 | | CD SingleMarie-Laure Béraud - Viens Simon! (1991) | That's a weird looking cover shot...
...At first, I thought: "Wow, she's got some really powerful looking forearms, holding herself up in that push-up style pose... and where on earth are her hind quarters... legs and such?"
It's only looking closer do I see her arms are her legs, and she's not actually fitted with a suitcase in her aft-section where her legs ought to be :)

Magic Marmalade 17th Jun 2021 | | CD SingleBeck - Mixed Bizness (2000) | Which is CD 2?
|
Magic Marmalade 7th Jun 2021 | | CD SingleDominique Petitgand - 10 Petites Compositions Familiales (1996) | These are the types of items that do dance around the head of a pin, in terms of definitions.
...I actually agree with all stated examples being albums, on account of the discs presenting a selection of different tracks, not highlighting a single track, with other tracks (or versions of) supporting it.
The fact that these are short compositions means they can physically fit on a 3" CD, but add a few seconds per track (fade outs etc.) and even you would agree by one definition (time) that it is an album.
The format alone cannot be the determining factor in these cases, they are A) convenience (We can fit it on a smaller disc), and B) it's a quirky marketing tool.
I think the other common feature of the examples given, is that they are relatively modern phenomenon...
3" CDs were designed for singles usage, these artists have simply used the format itself as a medium, or feature of their art: "What if I put a whole album on a disc designed for a single?" - "Can I squeeze an album's worth of material on such a disc?"... it's a challenge they may set themselves too, I think.
I will raise this in Mod world, to see if we can have this format (versions of) in CD albums, so they can have an appropriate home there, as this is clearly not an isolated case.
(Possibly more in the database too)
((I'll also continue my quest to have Club Edition as CD album format, alongside Maxi-CD for singles while I'm at it :))

Magic Marmalade 6th Jun 2021 | | CD SingleDominique Petitgand - 10 Petites Compositions Familiales (1996) | This is an album surely?

...would be nice to have that as a format in CD singles :)
((Pretty please))
|
Magic Marmalade 28th May 2021 | | CD SinglePaul Weller - Friday Street (1997) | Is this a home made burn CD, or an official CD?
|
Magic Marmalade 25th May 2021 | | CD SingleJosé González - Heartbeats (2005) | I hope he doesn't mind me relating this, but my thanks to Henry29, who tells me that he can only say anecdotally, that a rep came in (to shop?) and told him about this being a one day only release, as the black underside CD was an idea borrowed from PSP discs (Sony), and finding that they could play music off them as well, tried it out with this...
(Perhaps, with an intent to make all CDs have a black underside instead of silver?)
...In any event, it bears out what I have found in ebay listings, in that most (if not all) for sale there, are the DVD versions of the cd single (You see the little DVD logo on top right of the front cover).
...A little less clear on discogs listings, and if it is the case that a mixture of DVD singles and CD singles are in those for sale listings, it might be that people are not generally aware that there is a distinction to be made.
If you are after this black disc CD single version, it might be worth, therefore, asking sellers the question about which exact version they are selling first.
|
Magic Marmalade 8th May 2021 | | CD SingleJosé González - Heartbeats (2005) | Having a little problem with images at the moment (again....grrr)...
...But have managed a fairly decent snap of the black CD. This is the underside / playing surface, which probably better conveys it's inky blackness in a photo rather than a scan, when contrasted with the clear case.
(The label side replicates a vinyl record pattern, it is also predominantly black, but with small white print under the centre hole)

Magic Marmalade 8th May 2021 | | CD SingleBlackstreet - Booti Call (K.C. Miami Mix) (1994) | Changed primary artist to Blackstreet.
|
Magic Marmalade 6th May 2021 | | CD SingleJosé González - Heartbeats (2005) | Can anyone help me out with this CD?
I found a copy in the charity shop yesterday, and immediately thought the disc had been lost, as I couldn't see it in the case... by chance, the case flopped open and the disc threatened to pop out and run away when I put it down for a second, only then noticing the reason I couldn't see it was because the underside / playing surface of the disc is black!
(against a black cover insert - rendered invisible)
The thing I need help with, is that there are many listed on Discogs and ebay (cheaply), but none make reference to the particular colour of the underside, as if nothing noteworthy lies that way... but other than the discogs entry, which states "Black disc" in notes, I can find no reference to the fact mentioned in notes here, about it being either the first commercially available black disc, or that it was deleted on day of release (available fo only one day ?)
...So I wonder where that fact comes from, and also raises the question of whether there are standard silver copies of this, which may be being confused in listings on both ebay and discogs (jumbled up).... because by my reckoning, any version of a disc available only for one day ought to be rarer and not quite as readily found on market place sites as this seems to be.
Is there confusion of versions here?
Just how rare would this black one be?
(This disc looks like sorcery, as it is, to the eye, just black shiny plastic, that doesn't look like it'd play anything... not metallic... how does the laser read the bloomin' thing?!!!)
Any info on this appreciated.
(I'll look to get some images up soon)

Magic Marmalade 16th Apr 2021 | | CD SingleRoachford - The Way I Feel (Album Version) (1997) | Possibly, but if you look at the Roachford discography,
(none of which have been designated CD 1 or 2 yet)
... the cats end in either 5 or 2, which is common in CD singles, I just can't remember which signifies CD 1 and which 2 :(

Magic Marmalade 7th Apr 2021 | | CD SingleTravis - Why Does It Always Rain On Me? (1999) | You're welcome :)
(Almost missed it myself!)
Catalogue number is present (on spine of your lead image), which is now in place in it's proper data hole.
-I do recall a bit of a buzz at the time when Travis did this disturbing rendition of the Britney track on the radio, and I'm not sure where else it can be found on Travis CD singles, so this might be a more sought after version of this release.
|
Magic Marmalade 7th Apr 2021 | | CD SingleMark Morrison - Horny (C&J Extended Mix) (1996) | I've changed this to CD 2, as indicated by the cat suffix, and consistent with the other issue, suffixed: "CD1"

Enhanced disc with track apparently not on UK versions... cover of Britney Spears: One More Time.
|
Magic Marmalade 4th Apr 2021 | | CD SinglePaulMac - Just The Thing (2001) | Does this artist need a space in the name, or is that how he has it?
|
Magic Marmalade 1st Apr 2021 | | CD SingleEric Clapton - Grandes Mitos II (2000) | I've changed the artist to Eric Clapton throughout this disc, as no reference to other artists appears next to the tracks to state otherwise... any additional contributing artists can be submitted for me to pop in the notes.
I've also altered the title of this CD to: Grandes Mitos II
|
Magic Marmalade 1st Apr 2021 | | CD SingleNanne - Otacksamhet (2009) | I've changed this aritst name to just "Nanne", as her surname does not appear on releases.
(I have given her full name at the top of discography page though, for reference)
...Also, gathered all her releases on same page :)

|
Magic Marmalade 29th Mar 2021 | | CD SingleThe Real Milli Vanilli - The Original Keep On Running (Remix) (1990) | Should this be linked with Milli Vanilli, or have those two scapegoated fellas suffered too much already, and too long?
Don't want to perpetuate the cruelty of a hypocritical, fickle society.
Time to forgive and forget... and make the Vanilli righteous again?
(I thought Black Box had pretty much the same arrangement, but don't remember the vitriol coming their way in quite the same measure!)
((I'm going to make a point of buying their album next time I see it... I may evenbuy a Milli Vanilli T-Shirt!!! :))
Justice for Milli Vanilli!
