The Beautiful South - I'll Sail This Ship Alone		The scan of the disc is flagging up a classic case of 'CD rot'.

John Martyn - Classic John Martyn		You're right.
These days there are clear guide lines as to what does, and what does not, qualify as being a CD single. It's either 15 or 24 minutes. I've added a link.
Of course in 1986 it was all virgin territory and entirely artificial given that a CD could play for 74 minutes - unlike a vinyl 45 rpm record which could contain far less music.Chart Rules

John Martyn - Classic John Martyn		Yes there was, but since it was such a new format - on such a relatively new medium - there weren't any real guidelines.
It was certainly promoted as a single.
Also believe that a Ruby Turner release around the same time also laid claim to being the first CD single .......
