Drop Dead Fred (1991) (1991)
@Magic Marmalade
I'm a big fan of Rik Mayall and it was his attempt to break America. I think Phoebe Cates was a great choice, but as you say the script was too vulgar and mean to have a huge international appeal.

However, I saw it when I was about 10 years old and loved it then. I'm not doubting the acting is great from all involved and the plot hasn't really been done since. I can see the Tim Burton style, as well as Alice in Wonderland and Rik Mayall's own violent brand of slapstick.

I think where Rik Mayall failed to break America Simon Pegg succeeded. Both appeared in Guest House Paradiso which I found disappointing and they were both distributed by Vinegar Syndrome.

I think ultimately Rik Mayall was seen as a bit of an unlikely sex symbol and the best vehicle for him for international appeal might have been his Rik Mayall Presents series.

The Christian Licorice Store (1971) (1971)
The title screen is a projection within the film hence the letterboxing and rare for a film of this age are about 12 minutes in. For anyone trying to see it is available on Amazon in some countries.

How about Kingpin? It was billed as a feelgood comedy by some and he loses the tournament.

Also I think Clyde was also in Cannonball Run.

It's a fun film and one I've always enjoyed

C'è Ancora Domani (There's Still Tomorrow) (2023) (2023)
This film beat Barbie at the box office in Italy. It's a drama in the style of a 1940s film but with modern ideas.

Talk Of The Devil (1967)
@swbcfc
Illusion of Happiness seems to be a collaboration name for Eric Woolfson and Peter Jeffries. Eric Woolfson I'm sure you know. Peter Jeffries was a British composer who went on to compose for "nudie" films. The track appears on https://www.discogs.com/release/3904933-Various-The-Electric-Lemonade-Acid-Test-Volume-4-An-Anthology-Of-The-Spark-Label-1967-1970

Woolfson was an engineer and songwriter for the Spark record label; however I don't think Talk of the Devil ever had a single release.

@Magic Marmalade in my opinion one of Depp's best and he has done more good films than he gets credit for, also my favourite Jaramusch film.

I also recommend Ti West's House of the Devil for capturing 70s slasher and witchcraft films; sadly it gets a bit silly near the end. I've not seen The Love Witch, but would like to.

@Magic Marmalade I bought this on DVD back in the day. A huge disappointment, but not necessarily a bad film. What struck me most is just humorless it is.

True Romance (1993) (1993)
@Magic Marmalade I couldn't agree more. Tony Scott reels in the pretentiousness that plagues Tarantino's later films. I still think he has the midas touch, but his latest films are just way too long. I also agree it's one of the best 90s films.

@Magic Marmalade I agree it is one of their weaker movies, but they did raise the bar incredibly high with Fargo, Barton Fink and The Big Lewbowski. I think their worst are Intolerable Cruelty and the remake of The Ladykillers.

I remember liking it and it's total eye-candy. At the time there were a lot of stylish, but soulless horror films like "In Dreams" and "Stigmata" and while The Cell is better than most of them, it just leaves me cold.

I didn't have high expectations for this, but the concert footage is absolutely fantastic. It was previously classified as U for cinema, but got a 12A/12 for the BFI release. Has a great booklet as well. Well worth it for people interested in the 80s UK Ska Revival.

Claude Goddard is an alias of Jerome S. Kaufmann, but I don't think he's ever released a film under that name.
