Wicked Little Letters (2024) (2024)
Review
In a small English seaside town beset by xenophobic prejudice, Irish woman Rose arrives with her fatherless daughter and black boyfriend, but her outgoing friendly personality soon endears her to her neighbours, until some start receiving insulting and obscene letters. The offences are referred to the police, who are at the heart of all the prejudices, including against one of their own staff who is not only of Indian origin but worse, a woman.

Woman Police Officer Gladys Moss becomes the 'Harry Bates' of the story, contesting the injustice of the accusation. Will justice prevail? Tension to the very end, concluding with a glorious outburst of very wicked words.

Poor Things (2023) (2023)
Review
If you enjoyed the riddle that was Cronenberg's "Crash" you should get the same sort of enjoyment from Poor Things. Everything seems to be some kind of a metaphor, around the nature of love, control, and ageing. As in Crash there is a lot of "strong sex" throughout the story but non is pornographic, it is there to serve some intellectual purpose.
No spoilers, but the final dénouement is amusing enough, though probably not worth sitting through the previous two hours for.

Wish (2023) (2023)
Thanks - Loughrey is more accepting of the 'Frozen' side of Disney, but she also pays credit to their classics style that I applaud.

Wish (2023) (2023)
Review
Had an hour to kill today so I stopped by a cinema and chose "Wish" as I often like a bit of Disney. I didn't really enjoy it for two reasons: it was excessively "cutesie", nearly all its characters, especially the animals and the heroic little emoji-"Star" were insufferably cute. The only characters I found remotely credible were King Magnifico and Queen Amaya until they went downhill and were deemed 'baddies'. Second, the storyline didn't engage me, just as the storyline of "Phantom of the Opera" didn't; I just didn't care what happened to any of them. Pity really, and I was pleased to leave early to meet my friends.

Frances Ha (2012) (2012)
Black&White film, genre "mumblegrime" apparently
I couldn't find anything to engage with. A story-free romp through late adolescence, like Happy-Go-Lucky but without the genius of Mike Leigh to make it work. No bicycles.

Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) (2008)
Of course Poppy was irritating. Under Lee's direction everybody was portrayed life-like, but a little more so! I can relate to Scott's frustrated obsession with Poppy, and was quite horrified at his racist outburst. The Flamenco-teacher's OTT outburst against her cheating man was spectacular and very funny. Above all I felt for the submissive man in the group who had been pulled by the smart girl and ended up with the height of suburban domestic sophistication but not being allowed to be himself with his old friends: it was so accurate a portrayal of someone we all will have known in real life.

Låt Den Rätte Komma In (Let The Right One In) (2008) (2008)
Superficially a "Swedish contemporary teenage vampire movie", dripping with gore and ghastly facial prosthetics. Love slowly grows between the boy and his new friend the girl vampire, but can never be fulfilled.

This should delight the uncritical viewer yet encourages the analytical audience to consider the abusive and mutually dependent relationships between vampire and victim. The merciless Nemesis of the boy's tormentor is a further delight of this story.
