Magic Marmalade 17th Jul 2020		Cinema Sixteen Candles (1984) (1984)	Aged badly. Some dodgy moments judged by modern standards, not Hughes' greatest by a long chalk.
Magic Marmalade 10th Jul 2020		Cinema Avengers: Endgame (2019) (2019)	Infinty War was great, not least for the brave and shocking ending... ...but left this with too much to do, and I thought it was a bit messy, and didn't stand up to the previous instalment's promise. But, as with Star Wars... Thank God that's over with! ...Don't have to watch through endless credits at the back end of movies for snippets and teasers anymore, or be compelled to view every film in the franchise to know what's going on in the next. (I still haven't seen Thor: Ragnarok, so a couple of points passed me by, and didn't make sense... but once I have, I'll be done with Marvel franchisery :)

Magic Marmalade 3rd Jul 2020		Cinema The Invisible Man (2020)	Yes, it may have flaws now I think of it... But first time around it surprised me with refreshing original elements, and new ways to use old plot devices usually associated with this character... ... And made me come away thinking about all of that. Ending might have a n element of afterthought about it, or perhaps overthinking it - maybe it would have benefited from wrapping up earlier in the story after the first major twist. But certainly very well done, and largely unpredictable.

In fact, their inherent intelligence and education seems to be the source of this idiocy, as it blinds them all the more absolutely to realities that do not fall within the scope of their "knowledge". ...watch this to find out just how dumb smart people can be.

Magic Marmalade 30th May 2020		Cinema Unstoppable (2010)	Only now he's gone, do you realize what a master film maker Tony Scott was... long in the shadow of his brother Ridley, he's the film maker Roland Emmerich, Michael Bay, and Zach Snyder wish they were! The man knew how to make a top notch Hollywood movie. The others don't come close.
Magic Marmalade 16th May 2020		Cinema Transformers: The Last Knight (2017) (2017)	I don't quite know how it's happened, but somehow I've managed to have seen all these Transformers movies without actually having intended to do so! The first one was great entertainment, but the next two or three were typical nonsensical, messy, garbage that Michael Bay is known for... not knowing who his audience is... making a film for a younger audience but with a bawdy, crass, ill judged humour that shouldn't be for kids, and won't impress adults either... But the last two, although with the usual, over-involved, convoluted, self-indulgent storylines, really raised their game again, to something like the quality of the first one, and are very entertaining... Adding Mark Wahlberg has, surprisingly, lifted it a bit, and the humour squared up a bit better. The thing that is really worth mentioning here though is young actress Isabela Moner's performance... real star in the making there... she acts rings around everyone, including Hopkins! - one to watch out for I'd say, and should be cast in everything you can get her in.
Magic Marmalade 30th Apr 2020		Cinema Serenity (2005) (2005)	I reckon it was on the strength of this that Joss Whedon got the Avengers (assemble) Director's job... it's a shame they didin't give him a Star Wars movie, as this is more Star Wars-y than any of the recent trilogy. Excellent film.

Magic Marmalade 28th Apr 2020		Cinema Road House (1989)	I used to love this film, but boy is getting more dated the more time goes by... ageing very badly! (Mind you, it still has Genuine movie star Patrick Swayze and Sam Elliott in, so all might not be entirely lost).
Magic Marmalade 24th Apr 2020		Cinema The Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009) (2009)	The worst, most degenerate film in history... one grim idea, and it lives down to it.. Avoid like it were shoes made of wet turds.
Magic Marmalade 24th Apr 2020		Cinema Bone Tomahawk (2015) (2015)	I would have rated this much higher but for that fact that I don't mind saying I was left rather traumatised by the ending of this.... things you just can't un-see one you have seen them. I usually like a bit 'o' horror, but jeeez... (maybe it just caught me off guard, I don't know) ...Kids, even young adults should probably be kept well clear of this otherwise excellent film. Disturbing.
Magic Marmalade 12th Apr 2020		Cinema Synecdoche, New York (2008) (2008)	took me three goes to get into this film... thinking it was crap the first two attempts, but only when it was on tv one time, and I was too "tired and emotional" :) to find the remote, and sat dribbling into me beer while watching it, did I finally allow it to go on, and realise what a genius Charlie Kaufman is.
Magic Marmalade 12th Apr 2020		Cinema Sicario (2015) (2015)	Apparently Benicio Del Toro cut most of his own lines form the original script, so he said as little as possible to say, and so, making for a more effective character... ...And you have to say it worked!

Magic Marmalade 7th Apr 2020		Cinema Rambo: Last Blood (2019) (2019)	Awful, just awful... sad, depressing, overdone, and grim...makes you feel bad about yourself for having seen it. Not even worth a proper review.

Magic Marmalade 7th Dec 2017		Cinema Black Sea (2014) (2014)	Will be intrigued to watch this tonight on Film 4, if only to see the once-upon-a-Soviet-death-machine submarine, which is a very real old bucket, currently turning puce with rust in the River Medway, right next to the bridges... ...and which I believe some renovations to which, may have been paid for by inclusion in this film... (including the silver nose bit, which previously wasn't there, and is probably why it now at least stands upright in the water, as opposed to the near 30 degree lean it used to have) You can view this beastie for yourself on Google Street View - Canal Road - Strood (UK).

Magic Marmalade 22nd May 2017		Cinema The Haunting (The Haunting Of Hill House ) (1999) (1999)	I remember when this was released... the big gimmick was that at the key moment of CGI wonder and awe, the screen would widen, "imperceptibly slowly", in order to subliminally immerse the viewer in the experience. They kept this for the DVD release, which made my friends and I chuckle as it happened - very lame attempt at immersion, and just made you talk about that for ten minutes, and miss what was happening in the "story" :) One of those where the budget for the set was clearly the biggest part of their spending, and looked way over done (see: Dune, too).
